We have recently stayed in this hotel as part of a Shearings coach holiday. The hotel is very imposing especially when viewed from the ferry. The hotel was clean and comfortable and generally in a good state of repair although the carpets in the Wymyss wing do need some attention in places. The food was quite good except as we do not like to eat too early, and there is a window of an hour you go into eat, we often found some of the things were no longer on the menu when we went in later. We enjoyed the entertainment which was of a good standard and stayed downstairs in one of the many seating areas while the bingo was on, which we really dislike.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on our site, it's good to see that you have enjoyed your break with us. I have to say I'm with you on the bingo, but there's a lot of people out there who love it, still with the sunsets we have been having over the past couple of weeks the lounge was a great place to sit and relax.

Visited this hotel in May ,there were a few people about ,but at the bar there was only one person taking orders. We ordered sandwiches and tea and soft drinks ,they were terrible and the salad had no dressing on and was very dry, very poor food if this hotel is trying to encourage visitors out of season they have to improve the quality of the food. Then i was horrified on visiting the ladies, they were about five toilets and everyone was dirty, and they had not been cleaned for a long time.really disgusting.I wanted to report this before i left but no-one was at the reception desk.A big hotel like this is not setting a very good example if they want to encourage people to visit Rothesay,it's time to clean up their hotel.

I was dissapointed to read the review you posted on our site, and can only apologise for your experience, as you can see from many previous postings our food, service and cleanliness are generally well received from our visitors. In fact we have a reviewer posting a comment soley on a lunch visit as was yours, and they have posted a completely different view of the experience to that of yours.

Stayed for 4 nights and really enjoyed ourselves.

The hotel is very imposing and easily visible from the Wymyss Bay ferry on the approach in to Rothesay Harbour. It has large, attractive gardens in front with central steps leading down to the promenade. It is an old building, and considering the price we paid the ageing was acceptable - you can't pay 2 star prices and expect everything to be pristine. The building shortcomings were forgiven by the cleanliness of the hotel. It is a Shearings hotel and during our stay there were 5 large coach loads of guests - luckily they were not all on the same ferry as us! Shearings seem to have got their business right, whenever we go to any of their hotels they always seem to be fairly full.

We had paid extra for a sea view and were not disappointed - Rothesay has a beautiful bay and the view was great - we were even on the right side to see the sunsets. The room (301) was quite large - well kept, with comfortable beds. The bathroom was okay, let down by the shower which really needs replacing. Its water temperature is virtually uncontrollable, really hot or really cold with not much in between. It leaked badly, and if you try to wash your hair over the washbasin you end up paddling! From talking to other guests we know that that particular problem was common to more rooms than ours. There was tea and coffee making which was replaced daily, a TV and ample storage space. No in-room safe and, surprising these days, no wi-fi or internet access whatsoever, but free wi-fi is easy enough to get outside for the price of a drink.

The food was good with 3 choices or more for starter, main and dessert at dinnertime and the breakfast also had plenty of choices from cereals, hot food, toast, preserves etc. The waiting staff were very efficient and friendly. Seating was allocated on the first night for the full 4 night stay. The only slight complaint was that dinner was between 6.30 - 7.30 pm, it would have been nice to have an extra half hour tacked on so it was 6.30 - 8.00 pm.

Reception was okay, but more often than not the desk was empty and you had to ring and wait for someone to come out from the back office. We paid £5 per night for car parking, which was very limited but worth it. There was free parking easily available on the promenade but it was a steep little walk back up to the hotel.

Bute is a nice little island and Rothesay is very well maintained, the promenade area was excellent. There are quite a few shops but without any of the main-line chains. There is also a good choice of restaurants but again, none of the well known fast-food chains, We think it rather suffers from not having a bridge link to the mainland. There is a ferry from Wymyss Bay which takes 30 minutes and another from Colintraive to Rhubodach which only takes 5 minutes but both are rather expensive so once you get on the island you don't really want to have to pay again to get off, but for the few days we were there it was a pleasant, relaxing holiday and, if you are in your own car, easy to get around.

In summary, the hotel was very good value for money although it does have its limitations.

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view and ask if the shower is okay before accepting a room!

Thank you very much for posting your comments on our site. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your break at the Glenburn. I noted your remarks about the shower and will pass this on to our maintenance man. Over the past couple of weeks we've seen some spectacular sunsets, being in room 301 you must have had a great view of these. A bridge to the island would be more convenient, but then we'd loose that little bit of magic that being an island has over many other places. Thank you for the great comments about the staff, I'll be sure to pass these on.
