This lovely, clean and spacious property is to the rear of the main building and looks out onto a small well kept lawn suitable for sitting out on with deck chairs or children playing. A pebble beach with clear water and lots of shells to collect is literally across the road from the front of the owner's property and this kept my 4 year old boys readily amused on the days we didnt travel to visit the castle / play parks. Each morning around 6-7.30am the red deer foraged around outside the back bedrooms which was a nice surprise. The service was excellent and the landlady was very lovely and proactive at making sure our stay was perfect, from banners in the garden to celebrate the boys birthday to bringing around a mini bbq and outdoor table and chairs. Wifi is not great but it is possible if you sit in the kitchen close to the boiler. Plenty of towels and toiletries were provided and the kitchen was stocked with the basics eg salt, oil, washing up liquid etc.
For young children we were worried it might be difficult to keep them amused but with a bit of planning it was absolutely fine. We did the following: buckets to the pebble beach to collect shells every day; visited the free play parks at the Rothesay Leisure Centre (good selection of equipt and 1 mile away); Mount Stewart (has sit on winch slides and some good climbing frames) and the less well equipped Ettrick Bay play area; we walked to the beach at Ettrick Bay and saw the seals at the main seal viewing beach (Skelmsie?); visited Rothsay Castle (good outdoor grassed area amongst the towers); and we went to Rothsay Leisure Pool twice. The swimming cost us £7.70 for 3 adults and 3 children (2 were free as under 5) and was one of the nicest pools I have been to. It was better than Centreparcs for young children because it had the same beach style access (so you dont need to use steps to get in and out) but was lovely and quiet (only 2 other people were there on both week days we attended between 11 and 1300 hours). It has also been newly refurbished so was nice and clean with plenty of foam toys and plastic watering cans to keep children occupied. There is also a nearby riding school which we didnt get chance to use but will consider next time.
My husband and I both went on several runs around the island and the place is perfect for running adjacent to the sea and seeing wildlife. If you are a couple or have older children I would recommend taking bikes as the lightly trafficed roads along the coast are perfect for cycling. There was a cycle hire shop in Rothesay which requires a £20 deposit per bike.
The ferry ride to Rothesay itself was part of the holiday. It takes 35 minutes and we saw dolphins about 1 mile out from Rothesay on both crossings - the children loved it, particuarly the fact you could buy ice creams on board :-)
Overall we had a brilliant time and would definitely come again.

We stayed a fantastic few days at the spotlessly clean "The Guest Wing" back in July 2012 and are delighted to have booked to return again in August of this year. The four bedroom house is very spacious with a lovely ground floor bedroom and bathroom ideal for seniors; great when travelling with "the mother-in-law". The kitchen and bathrooms were quite modern and the decor welcoming. Although the house isn't walking distance from the ferry with luggage - it was close enough to enjoy an evening stroll into town for dinner. We're always amazed at the beautiful palm trees in Rothesay (hence the "tropical island" name we've given it) and if you're lucky enough to get a warm sunny day - a trip to Ettrick Bay or Mount Stuart House are worthwhile.
This is a spacious and comfortable accomodation, and has most of the facilities you would have at home. It is a peaceful location , close to the shore with quite a substantial rear garden. It offers the opportunity for a relaxing break for young families with children and also for older guests who will appreciate the quiet , self contained atmosphere and ambience. It is an ideal base from which to explore the Isle of Bute and beyond. I strongly recommend this accomodation.
