This was my second year stay in the hotel. I found the hotel to be clean, the food to be excellent, staff very attentive and the owner took time to ask residents if everything was alright....nice touch. The bedroom and bathroom are nicely laid out and not cramped. The prices are moderate. The hotel is nicely placed for visiting the rest of the island. I go to Bute for the Jazz Festival in May each year and I have booked a room at the Victoria for the Jazz Festival 2014.

Room Tip: I like a room with a sea view. The dining room has fabulous sea views

The meal in the restaurant upstairs is delicious and the desserts to die for! For light meals or coffee and cake visit the bistro downstairs, where you can relax and enjoy nice music. The location of the hotel is very convenient and some rooms offer beautiful view. Beds are comfortable and you also get complimentary water and fruit bowl at arrival, which is a nice touch.

After an extensive tour of the islands, Victoria hotel was very disappointing. We found the tariff very high for such an average hotel. The only redeeming feature was the view. The walls in our room were paper-thin and the noise from other guests was not welcome. The Bathroom was very cramped, and beds with blankets and sheets not acceptable. The norm throughout Europe and Britain is beds with duvets - more hygienic! Also a room on the third floor without a lift - not great at all.

Sorry to read your review as we do try to ensure that all our guests have a satisfactory and enjoyable stay at The Victoria. If there is something wrong that we can sort, we actively encourage it be brought to our attention during the stay. I am not sure when you were with us but our tariff does vary and we do have some very competative rates especially if your dates are flexible. We hope you will return to The Victoria and look forward to seeing you in the future.

This was our first trip to the Isle of Bute although I have been coming to Scotland for over 50 years. We had a few days to spare (sans enfants!) and it is not too far beyond the border plus a short hop over the firth. The snowy weather (end of March 2013) threatened to upset our plans but we made it in the end. We telephoned the day before we travelled to check with the hotel to see if there was any 'local' information that could have helped before setting out but response from the folk we spoke with was a considerable distance from the warm welcome that is normally associated with Scotland.
Our room overlooked the bay, as requested, and was quite comfortable. However, the heating had not been turned up so the room was cold on arrival.
We made use of the restaurant downstairs for evening meals on two occasions - it would have been a third but there was no advance warning that the kitchen would be closing at 8.30pm.
Breakfast in the 1st floor restaurant was a real treat with the view out over the bay with the sun doing its best. The coffee was really disappointing - instant in a cafetiere does not impress. The cooked breakfasts were really good and the service most attentive.
Really appreciated having fresh towels in our room each day, perhaps they could put fresh water bottles in each day too?
The towel rail in the bathroom needs some attention and I would like to be able to adjust the temperature of the water on the shower so that it does a bit more than just warm. The layout of the bathroom is a bit cramped particularly if someone is feeling unwell and needs to be spending time on the loo.

Would I come back to Rothesay again? - YOU BET. Would I come back to the Victoria Hotel? - NOT SURE.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room facing the sea

Thanks for your review. Unfortunately the cold spell lasted longer than we would have liked. Rooms awaiting arrival should have the heating on and if not, it is a mistake on our part. Your stay is important to us and we do encourage all guests to advise us at the time when something is wrong. I am not sure what happened with the restaurant as we encourage bookings particularly for later dining as it will colse at 8.30pm if it is quiet. The shower temperature does adjust when you pull the handle towards you. Bottles of water are complimentary on arrival and supplied on request thereafter. Not sure if you will come back to The Victoria? I really hope that you do and that when something is wrong you let us know at the time.

We were not informed at time of booking that there were no lift facilities....we did book for 2 adults and a baby. We were put on the top floor.
The staff in the upstairs restaurant were mostly polite and attentive, however when using the bistro restaurant downstairs the service was very poor...I suspect down to lack of attention to detail by manager throughout training or recruitment processes.
Upon leaving we had a dispute with our bill...we had to wait to approx 10 mins to speak to assistant manager who told us we had to wait as she was "very busy". When she eventually arrived she never thanked me for waiting, apologized, or introduced herself. She never even asked how could she be of assistance. The assistant manager asked "so what is it you want".

Room Tip: Don't.....

From the content of your review we are able to acknowledge your stay with us. We are always disappointed when a guest is not satisfied with our service and will listen to any criticism which will assist in improvement. Our staff rotate between departments and if a complaint about service does arise, it is very important that we deal with it at the time. You did indeed wait ten minutes to speak to our manager who unfortunately at the time was dealing with another guests requirements. When we did examine your bill, we confirmed that it was in fact correct and that you were aggreived as you had found an old promotion leaflet for dining which had been left by a previous guest. Despite the leaflet being invalid, as a gesture, we refunded the small difference that would have been available at the time of the promotion. This was confirmed to yourself immediately in correspondence with an explanation about the leaflet. Regrettably we cannot confirm or agree with your account of event in respect of how we deal with advice on the hotel not having a lift, your allocation of a room on the third floor or our managers comments at the time of your discussion. However we will confirm that we will continue to strive for excellent service from friendly staff who genuinely want to please at all times.

The rooms was comfortable and quiet and staff reasonably friendly although the breakfast staff seriously needs training, because they have absolutely no concept of hospitality. The WiFi is virtually unusable.

On most occasions we rarely know who has written a review. This one stands out a little as we do not often get complaints about WiFi albeit when we do if it is not an external problem, re booting usually sorts it out. If you are the gentleman that was conducting a training course with multiple lap tops, I understand that our receptionist assisted you with an alternative password to access the internet and we have no record of any further problems. We really want to know at the time about any equipment problem, that way we our maintenance engineer can deal with it. Now what happened at breakfast? Our staff do receive training and we expect them to offer excellent customer service and anything short we always want to know about. Whilst it is too late to deal with, it would be excellent to get feedback on what area you felt our staff lacked proper training and you can be assured that we will listen to your comments.
