Owner description: Situated on the Isle of Bute, Rothesay Castles dates back to the early 13th century and is remarkably well preserved in spite of its age. Built by the Stewart family to defend against invading Norwegian fleets, Rothesay’s immense circular curtain wall makes it unique in Scotland. In 1230 it survived a three-day siege by King Haakon IV of Norway which precipitated the castle’s fortification with four round towers. It became a royal residence soon after and was later occupied by Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence and served as a base for Cromwell’s troops in the late 17th century. The grandiose great hall in the gatehouse was restored by a Marquess of Bute in 1900 which now contains informative interpretive display which illuminate the history of the castle and its inhabitants. The 15th century St Michael’s Chapel in the courtyard is another of the castle’s impressive surviving features.

“Small but excellent”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

This is well kept and easily accessable. Right in centre of Rothsay but with limited parking. It is easy to get around and has historic information at each point. I was intrigued to discover it was once ruled by Norway!

“An historic spot”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

The interpretation at Rothesay Castle makes it easy to understand its long history and the struggles that took place around it. It was certainly a history lesson for me, with stories of Viking raids and such like. Highly recommended.

“An impressive sight.”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We did not expect to find the castle in such good condition.
The banners in the main hall made a real impression and the video was so informative about the sites past history

“Quiet and quaint”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

A really old and traditional castle, somewhat in ruins. Although this castle doesn't have the interpretive info or restoration of other Scotland castles, it's a wonderful to explore. The moat is a great feature, and the dungeon is also pretty neat!
