One of the most magnificent houses I've toured. No expense was spared on this incredible Victorian mansion. The gardens were just O.K., but the mansion made up for it.

We took the train from Glasgow central to Wemyss station - then the ferry to Rothsay. The ferry station is attached to the train station so it is foolproof.

I made the mistake of buying the combined train/ferry ticket. Just buy the train ticket at Glasgow Central. Then you can buy a combine bus/Mount Stuart ticket. When all is said and done this saves you @ 2lbs each.

Avoid food at Mount Stuart and eat outside the Wemyss station while you wait for the return train. Good chips place and a few bars.

By very early train from London Euston to Glasgow to Wemyss Bay then ferry and bus to Mount Stuart, then return. Architecturally it is the grand and elaborate interior that is so worth seeing, particularly if you have seen Cardiff Castle and Castle Coch in Wales. Pity no photographs to show friends and family. Pleasant and very rural setting. A varied and well worthwhile day.

Combination of great architecture, fantastic interiors and diverse gardens and grounds make this a great day out. My sister and I bought a "combo" ticket for approx £20 each at Wemyss Bay ferry terminal which covered the 30 minute ferry crossing, the short bus ride to Mount Stuart and entry to the house and gardens which automatically entitles you to a one hour guided tour of the house.

The interior has to be seen to be believed (although the hour is almost not long enough to admire all that's on display) and the grounds are extensive enough to allow for several hours worth of gentle meandering.

All in all, a lovely way to spend a day - and the bus driver and the ferry crossing were an added bonus!!

From the outside Mount Stuart is magnificent but the interior is quite amazing. There is so much to see and the hour-long tour really too short to take in all that you would like. Everything from the paintings and tapestries to the furniture and works of art to the decor and the stonework and the stained glass are wonderful. Much care is taken by the guides, if ours was a good example, and the information shared just fascinating.
We didn't have time to see much of the grounds but the parts we saw were beautifully kept.
