We greatly enjoyed our night at the Royal. We were in room 3, a large comfortable first floor room with a bay window. The staff were excellent and the food was professionally presented, with an emphasis on local seafood. The accommodation offers a number of very comfortable reception and dining rooms. Guests are encouraged to use a separate bar and all members of staff went out of their way to make guests comfortable.

Room Tip: There are two, loch view rooms that also have bay windows, room 3 and one immediately above it.

Thank you for yet another 5 star review. As you say rooms 3 & 9 have the bay windows which gives you 180 degree viewing of the Kyles, our other sea view rooms have either dual aspect windows to enable viewing up and down the Kyles or have large bathrooms, giving you a view of the Kyles from your bath tub! The hotel dates back to 1865 and does have a few quirky creaking floor boards and sloping floors but we feel it gives it character and charm. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Christine

We have just returned from a two night stay at the Royal an Lochan are were hugely impressed by their standards of accommodation, food, welcome and the superb loch-side location. We ate fresh locally sourced scallops on both nights and they were sensational as were the langoustines. The cheeseboard was a trifle unexciting, but then at least the cheeses were local. The waiting staff were very friendly and obliging. We will certainly make a return visit.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to have a sea view as far as we could see and the view of the dawn from the windo...

I think the title of your review 'Perfect Peace and Luxury' does sum up our hotel and its surroundings. We pride ourselves in our locally sourced food especially the shellfish from Prentice Seafood's in Tarbert. We are sorry to hear you found the cheeseboard unexciting, we are currently looking to revamp the choice of cheese along with adding a home made chutney, to replace the apple, grapes and celery, however the Arran oatcakes will stay as once again these are local (ish) produce. We hope to see you again at the Royal an Lochan. Christine

If you want somewhere to chill out with views to blow your mind, then this is the place for you, especially room 3 which has bay window sea view. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars with you as there is something going on in the water every minute of the day - especially if you like gannets.
All staff encountered on trip were delightful and extremely friendly and a special mention must go to the housekeeping staff who keep the whole place pristine. Fabulous lounge area to chill with more than ample books, dvd's and games available - pub is VERY tired and not a place you would want to sit for any length of time. Owner directed us to a fabulous hidden gem - Kilbride Bay. Only about a 6 minute drive and then about a mile walk down a track with an AMAZING stretch of white sand and outstanding views of Arran. Word of warning, if you are going you need to take some form of cover as there are no shaded areas as well as plenty of water and suncream.
Food in the Royal an Lochan is prepared and presented to an extremely high standard and only criticism would be the portion sizes are extremely small and the menu was the same on both nights we were there. Disappointed to see same menu on both nights - would be good to change at least one item on the menu to give people an option if they don't like seafood. Did choose a starter as a main course as I didn't like lamb or seafood options avail and didn't want same meal for a second time and asked for it with potatoes and veg - came with 3 marble sized potatoes and a little lump of supermarket salad pretty hungry at the end of my meal as again, sweet menu same as previous evening. Despite this SMALL gripe, I WOULD return again.

Room Tip: Room 3 or any of the sea view rooms.

Thank you for your review, the Cowal Peninsula is a truly magical place as you say, which offers peace and tranquility in abundance. With regard to your 'small gripe', we are known for our seafood so it does feature on our seasonally changing menu, but with 6 starters (3 x seafood) and 7 main courses ( 3 x seafood) most of our guests wish to stay longer so that they can sample most of the menu. With chicken, lamb, duck and trout dishes on our main choices as well as the seafood of scallops, langoustines and mussels we generally please most people. With regard to the starter portion you received as a main, the reason you received a small portion is because the waiting staff perceived that you wanted a small main course, which some guests do request as they find our main courses too large for them, and you were only charged a for a starter. Our menu is changed seasonally as it is with many hotels at our level. We look forward to welcoming you back to this wonderful area of Scotland. Christine

This was a break booked through Hotels of Distinction website. We had a wonderful 3 night stay. The food and views are second to none. The staff were warm and friendly and very relaxed. The room had a stunning view of the sea and was extremely comfortable with a fabulous large bathroom. Thank you all.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview - definitely worth the small extra expense!

I have been to this hotel twice over the last 2 years. It's a great stop over for motorbike trips. Rooms clean , well furnished and crisp bedding. The lounge area with fires, views very relaxing. Bar area is a great place to have bar dinner or a pint / chat to locals. Whatever suits. Bar man very helpful. Great service.
Breakfast is very high standard.
I cannot speak highly of this hotel. It does what is says on the "tin".
I'm booking another trip with my daughter in July/Aug

An old traditional hotel that is work in progress- shifting from loud tartan carpets to modern, muted colours and design. A great location, with lovely views and efficient, unfussy staff who help create a very relaxed, homely atmosphere. The restaurant was very busy and the food - especially the seafood - really good. The room was very comfortable, with fabulous outlook over the sea. A great place to go for rest and relaxation. Definitely worth a visit,

Thank you for your very true review. Our hotel is a work in progress, so far in the 3 years we have been here we have, we have taken the hotel out of its bankruptcy state that it was in when we bought it. We have worked on some bedrooms but not all and the same goes for the public rooms. We are now building a reputation for good food be it in the bar or restaurant and are getting a good few number of return guests. All this however takes time, but we are getting there and we are also enjoying it along the way. It also seems that most of our guests are enjoying it as well. Hope to see you again. Christine

We had a beautiful room but the heating had not been on before we got there and it took hours to become bearable. The large windows gave a wonderful seaview but helped to keep the room cold. (Mind you it was 3 centigrade outside) The staff were extremely courteous and could'nt be more helpful. We enjoyed a meal in the bar next to the woodburning stove!
Recommended in the warm weather.

Room Tip: Phone ahead to ask for the heating to be put on in wintertime.

I am so sorry that we failed to ensure the heating was on long enough to warm the room. Sometimes March can be a bit of a mixed bag of weather and we obviously misjudged this one. I hope that did you spoil your stay and that we may see you return to the Royal an Lochan sometime in the future. Kind regards, Christine
