“Not great”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Four geriatric cyclists passed through. Met with a welcome and a clean room Good breakfast. However the very atmosphere reeks of damp and decay and those in charge clearly do not care for custom. We were a bit of a nuisance. Leave them to their desire to be left alone

The hotel is well located on the Cowal Peninsula and the views excellent. The food is very good and ample and the bar is well stocked. The place its self is tired and could do with some sprucing up and a little more attention to the detail. The place is clean and tidy and the beds comfortable.

I'll save everyone a lot of time and tell you this..... When the Dutch couple took over this place it was obviously a private joke to see how much people will tolerate their arrogance...

I used to come here as a young lad and it was booming, all the locals drank here, the taxi guy was here, it had the best food and the best pool table..... Now all it has to offer is musky old carpet, 4 channel TV and some unfortunate tourists that thought because it was called the Tighnabruiach hotel, it must be good.

Wrong.

Don't even consider eating here.

It's awful... Keep walking... There is nothing more disappointing than what you get after that climb up the driveway!

Our stay was made very memorable by the friendliness of the owner Tonny and his bar man Douggie. We would return in an instant, although the hotel is not modern, It's homely and comfortable. This was perfect for us. Breakfast was very good. Everyone should stay here and have fun at the bar with Tonny and the locals.

I spent 4 nights here in May and had a great time. Jackie and Tonny were very kind and friendly. Tonny was a great cook and although I was out too early in the mornings for breakfast, their dinners were huge and good. The room was clean, had a great bed and duvet,an excellent shower and lovely views of the water and village. All the locals I met were very friendly and Tighnabruaich was a great base for looking around Argyll. I did some very scenic walks around the village, including getting the bus up to the Kyles of Bute Viewpoint and then walking down, via the awesome views at the radio mast) and got buses to Benmore ,Ardkinglass,Dunoon and Pucks Glen (you have to plan ahead carefully for travel on public transport in Argyll, but it is 'doable'). Great stay, will be back!!.

This is a miserable and repellent establishment. No welcome is forthcoming and the very atmosphere reeks of damp and decay and those in charge clearly do not care for custom. This place should be a goldmine but clearly the owners seek nothing other than a life estranged from the reality that is hospitality in the 21st Century.

Tighnabruaich is a kind of pass by or through place that few wise travellers would stop in. However, with a bit of effort and less insolence, places like this hotel might just lift the place back to the map and out of its Home Counties Brigadoon.

But for the fact that we were tired and hungry after a long drive we would have eschewed this Caledonian Fawlty Towers because it has to be said we were warned about the place. We took the bait and we suffered the consequences. Might I suggest that any time you are passing the Tighnabruaich Hotel...just pass, you'll thank me in the end.

After reading some of the reviews here I wasn't sure what to expect. All I can go on is my own experience which was excellent. The owners and staff are really friendly, the room was clean, really comfy bed, brilliant shower, quiet. Had a great nights sleep both nights. The manager even gave us a lift to our jetty on our leaving day. The breakfast is massive and really tasty. Can't really complain about anything to be honest. Thought it was great value.

Room Tip: Get one on the first floor. That way you won't hear drunken revelers coming and going from the p...
