“Very welcoming and friendly restaurant”
Reviewed June 6, 2011

Passed through Lochgilphead over the May Day weekend and stopped to find somewhere to eat. We asked in 2 different shops where they would recommend and both pointed us in the direction of a well hidden small restaurant down a back lane called the Smiddy Bistro.

The place was very busy but the staff were welcoming and took time to speak to my daughter while we were waiting for a table. She was fascinated by the salad display full of fruit and the baking table full of goodies so it seemed worth waiting.

I was tempted by all of the specials on the boards and the menu was varied too. Although there was no children’s menu small portions of menu items were offered for children so my daughter had macaroni cheese with garlic slice and some of the fruit based salad on the side. The food presentation was lovely and it lived up to expectations when tasted, so much so that we scheduled our return journey to go back for lunch again on the way home. It was lovely that the staff recognised us and again took time to talk. I would certainly recommend this place for the warm welcome, efficient service and the variety of tasty beautiful local food.

“A real flavor of Scotland”

The seafood platter was fantastic but what really made it for us was the quaint and unique atmosphere. we have 3 kids, 14, 12 and 6 and there was something that met each of their tastes. The staff were friendly and made sure we had everything we needed.

Lochgilphead is a great little West coast town, which we enjoying walking around

“Not recommended”
Reviewed April 30, 2011

A promising restaurant on the outside spoiled by high prices and small portions. Side salad good. They also had a very unreasonable attitude to buggies despite it being fairly empty. Isn't it preferable to have a buggy in the corner with a sleeping baby in it than said baby screaming?! Baffling.

“Rustic atmosphere and excellent value for money”
Reviewed August 31, 2010

This place was recommended by my parents who often stop by on their way to Crinan. It is hidden down a lane that runs parallel to the main street in Lochgilphead, and is well worth searching for.

I was in on a Wednesday lunchtime, and it was crowded. Despite all the tables being full, we were served quickly by a very friendly waitress.

As well as offering lots of traditional lunch staples like soup, sandwiches and baked potatoes, the Smiddy has some more sophisticated and larger main courses and a board with daily specials. There were lots of cakes on display too for the morning coffee and afternoon tea crowds. I ate poached trout with a salad, and it was refreshing to be offered much more than the usual tired piece of lettuce and soft tomato. The salad was great, including slices of kiwi, strawberry and clementine. All together very good, and excellent value for money.

The atmosphere was very cosy. It was busy but not too noisy. The building itself is an old stone building, and the bare stone walls and rustic furnishings inside add to the charm.

I liked the rustic atmosphere, good service and value for money best. The only thing negative thing I could say is that I didn't have room for one of the tasty looking cakes!
