“Good food but patchy atmosphere?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

We visited in a large group one august evening and after struggling to negotiate a table found we were the only clients! Service was a bit flaky and you got the impression that the staff would be happier to have the night off. I guess they prosper more on coach tours and lunchtime trade. Nothwithstanding that the food was great and the menu mouthwatering if you are a fish fiend.

“Fishy heaven!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2012

Having eaten at various Loch Fyne restaurants around the south, we couldn't resist the chance of eating at the original Oyster Bar while we were staying in the Trussochs.

We were not disappointed. My starter of mussels with chorizo and spinach was wonderful - the chorizo providing a spicy balance to the sweet mussels. My other half had the classic smoked salmon, which was (as you would hope) just right - not over-smoked but with lots of flavour. I also had a oyster (natural), which was a good size with a delicate flavour.

For my main course I had a whole baked seabream, stuffed with lemon and thyme. Perhaps just a tad over-cooked, the lemon and herbs really brought out the flavour of the fish. Our other main of seabass with lemon butter had a bit too much butter, but the fish was cooked perfectly and was spanking fresh.

The accompanying vegetables were pretty unimaginative - steamed carrots, brocolli, cauli and mange tout with butter - but at least they were not overcooked.

Service was good - wecoming, friendly, knowledgeable and prompt (although it should be noted that we dined at 17:00 - during the dead-zone for a restaurant).

“not for kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

We had our evening meal there and although the food is lovely and the service excellent, we had our 5 year old and it felt uncomfortable - there were no other kids at the restaurant and there is no childrens menu and although staff tried to be helpful with our daughter - I wouldn't want to take her there again

“First Ever Oyster (Raw!)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

We enjoyed a most interesting evening at this restaurant. Having never ever eaten an oyster before, we decided to be brave and try this experience. All the staff we encountered were lovely and in particular Laura gave us exceptional customer service, “coaching” us all the way about how to eat the oyster (raw). Having heard many mixed things about the eating of oysters, naturally we were nervous – absolutely no need, it was very enjoyable, they taste of the seaside (if that can be described as a taste). The rest of our meal was very tasty and although the restaurant had already closed before we left, no-one made us feel rushed to leave and all the members of staff we encountered were friendly towards us.

“Disappointing.....has LFOB lost its sparkle?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

A return to what has been a firm favourite for many years was a distinct disapointment. Although late afternoon and the restaurant was quiet we were left waiting at the entrance whilst most unwelcoming staff seemed to debate whether we could have a table or not! Finally shown into the "conservatory" overlooking scruffy gravel with 2 foot high weeds we waited over 20 minutes to get a drink. Incidentally the wine list prices are quite frankly ridiculous.....£25 for Muscadet! The food in general was good and lived up to expectations but come on guys....get your act together, bring back the warm welcome and efficient service and please rethink the wine prices; they're just plain daft.
