“Easily the worst food for 100 miles!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2010

Hi, I have stayed at the Grey Gull (the Royal) several times. Despite the rooms being fine and there being a wifi connection, the food is without doubt the worst in the west of scotland. Having had to eat here several times i think i can say it's not just bad luck. The food is grossly overpriced for what you get and the cook seems unable to make anything that doesnt involve cream or cheese and has the strangest food combinations. Not ideal at the end of a hard day when you want some healthy tasty food. Overall, avoid. Head up to the Loch Melford, the Cairnbaan or the Horseshoe.

weekend stay with wife and friends, great deal through Classic Britain, hotel on main road across from Loch Fyne, nice clean room, fair size and looked as if recently refurbished, good breakfast /evening meal. a couple of pubs in Ardrishaig, nice walk along the crianan canal, friendly staff.

Stayed for one night on business. I had single occupancy of twin room & I don’t know the cost as it was booked & paid for by a client.

The room was quite nice. A decent size & nicely decorated. A decent sized desktop with light which is useful for business types with laptops. Small things make a difference & the toiletries were a bit sparse - there was a soap dispenser over the wash basin & nothing else, nothing in the shower/bath & no shampoo. You might expect this in a small B&B but not in an hotel. Also someone’s toe nail clipping left on the bathroom floor.

Breakfast buffet a bit basic but OK. Tea rubbish as you make your own with hot water out of a vending machine which is not as good as a proper pot of tea. Again a small piece of corner cutting that spoilt it. Cooked breakfast OK. Dinner was quite good with a good range to choose from.

I previously stayed here in 2007 & the service & attitude was a bit off then. A bit casual & they were a bit superior in attitude. This time it was much better. Reception staff pleasant & nice lady served us for dinner. Breakfast service a bit gruff but OK.

Car park a bit small - we just managed to squeeze in at about 19.00 hrs.

Overall I would say its OK if you have to stay near Lochgilphead.

I have now stayed (with work) in this hotel on six seperate occassions, every time in a different room, which so far have ranged from a very small & basic (& not very clean) single to a spacious twin - which would have easily passed for any one of the large national hotel chains. The food in the restaurant in simple but hearty and tasty, and the service is efficient and friendly... Its a good place to lay your head enroute to somewhere else in the Argyll area but it (and Ardrishaig) has little to keep you there any longer. If your are needing somewhere in Lochgilphead/Ardrishaig its fine for a night... (or tow with business) but not reccommended as a base for holidaying

We stayed at the Grey Gull for three nights at the end of May 2009 and found it a very pleasant experience. The staff (especially the man at Reception - Murdo?) were very firendly and helpful with the requirements of my elderly mother. The food was substantial and good. Rooms large and comfortable. A good base for a lovely area.

I booked a stay at the Grey Gull for me and my partner and 3 other friends as we were getting married in Lochgilphead. The rooms are not normally available until 3pm. they told me not to worry as a room would be made available for us to get changed in. we arrived around 12.30 and we all got our keys. Great start we thought. The rooms were comfortable, lets be honest, its not the Ritz nor does it profess to be. It was adequate. Nice size and fresh not like some larger bigger named hotels Ive stayed in. The staff were VERY helpfull throughout. Then came the meal in the restaurant. I see a previous review has slated them as being boil in the bag. Nothing could be further from the truth. I had the Chicken and haggis with a creamy mushroom sauce, I asked if the sauce could be changed for a whisky sauce as it is my fav with this dish. they did it and it was superb. we were all giving each othera a taste of each others food as we all wanted each other to know how good the dishes were. Each one was fantastic. I cannot rave enough about it. It really was that good! Raymond took time out to speak and make time for his guests to make sure we were happy and nothing was too much trouble. and a big thank you to the lady partner of Raymond (sorry we didnt ask you your name) for the 2 bottles of champagne as a gift from her at our dinner, with fancy champgne glasses. It added a special moment to the whole day. we still talk about it to this day. in summary, 5 of us came up for a very small wedding, as we had been married before so wanted no fuss. and we all say that it was the best wedding we had ever been to. We will DEFINATELY BE BACK!!!

I read the reviews here and contacted the hotel to reserve three rooms for our family. The staff are really lovely and with this in mind we approached the hotel with confidence that we would enjoy our stay. Sadly we were disappointed. Upon parking we were greeted by the site of dried sewage from a drain overflow at the side of the hotel. This had dried and no effort had been made to clean it up. We were advised that we had been given the three best rooms. One room was nice the others were nothing special. Our room had a shower head that did not fit the holder, watered down soap in the dispenser, no bathmat and lightbulbs that needed changed. Clearly maintainance is an issue here. The evening meal was of the packaged - boil in the bag style of instant results, the vegetables were fresh however. Overall, this is a place that with work and care could do a lot better with a bit more effort and leadership. As it is its worth passing by. Given what we experienced, I am now more dubious as to the other reviews of this establishment on trip advisor.
