“A wonderful place for exploring Deeside and the Cairngorms”
Reviewed April 10, 2017 for a stay in March 2016

When arriving, we were welcomed by the friendly owner who lives next door. As we visited Braemar in late March, the weather was still cold and damp. Therefore it was such a nice experience to find Castleton Cottage cozy and warm with the fireplace already lit. It took us just a minute to feel at home in this lovely cottage. The worst experience was leaving after a wonderful week.

“Cosy but spacious cottage in an idyllic village”
Reviewed February 20, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

The cottage was warm and welcoming on arrival. Sandra & Derek were really friendly and were just next door if we needed them. We really enjoyed the home-made treats that kept appearing through the week! The kitchen / lounge felt quite large yet it was also cosy. It had everything we needed. Once the log burner was roaring this living area soon warmed up. The bedroom is really spacious and the bathroom has a bath & shower. There is a small porch for boots and coats.

The downsides are that the burner needs time to warm the place up and the bedroom can get a little cold. (Electricity is paid for via a meter and we didn't want to pay a lot for the storage heaters). There is no towel rail in the bathroom but we hung them up in the lounge when we went out.

“Lovely visit, missing it already!!”
Reviewed October 9, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

Beautiful little cottage with everything you need all there for you. Sandra and Derek were so warm and friendly, they showed us in (with the fire already burning for us, kettle boiled, milk and bread in and fresh flowers on the side) they were next door if needed them (which we didn't, as there was plenty of info on where to go and what to do in the cottage). The location was superb and want to go back again as feel we only discovered a fraction of the surrounding area. Could not fault anything at all. As for the negative comments about the decor and colour coded chopping boards??? I have no idea what planet people are on sometimes. If you want a modern decor (which i always think feels too clinical) then go to a hotel!! This is a COTTAGE and i think it is perfect just as it is. And there are plently of chopping boards and utensils, everything is well thought of. Will definately be returning one day. Missing the fire and cozy evenings already.

“Perfect cosy cottage in the perfect highland village”
Reviewed August 14, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

I travelled from London to Braemar during the first week of august and was lucky enough to come across this gem of a cottage. Pre arrival I had email conversations with the owners and telephone contact in the days before arriving. Fairly straightforward to find once in Braemar on arriver I was warmly greeted by Derek the owner who had already got a lovely log burning fire set and lit and was at the front door to great me. First impressions was really cosy, homely, clean property in-which the owners clearly take a great deal of pride.
The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay, good WiFi access, TV collections of DVD, board games - really everything has been thought of.
Owners Sandra and Derek were so very warm and welcoming and are available just next door to this property should any issues come up which was good to know. Struggling to find anything to fault to be honest - HIGHLY recommended

“Cozy and warm yet spacious”

My first reaction on entering the cottage was that it was bigger 'in real life' than I expected from the photos. The counter with the bar seats is very big, far bigger than most proper dining tables I've seen, and will easily hold a game or a jigsaw puzzle with plenty room for other necessary things like snacks and drink.

The washing machine was very handy to have, did 2 shorts and a long as i was there for three weeks. The bedroom is very spacious and has a lot of storage space which is ideal for longer stays when you don't want to 'live out of your suitcase'. You won't need to wash the linen that goes with the cottage (towels, bedlinen etc) as Sandra takes care of that.

I had no problem with the bathroom, but taller people might have problems as the shower is under the sloped roof, which was standing height to me but might give you trouble if you're over 1.80 meters.

It is only a short (and I mean really short!) distance to the village high street with all its shops and the supermarket. And it's the same distance to some of the walks on the forested hill to the east of Braemar. Sorry most hills and mountains in Scotland got pretty unpronounceable and therefor hard to remember names!

The woodstove was lovely on the colder nights and it was fun to rekindle my repressed pyromaniac persona after so long a time living without a woodstove. I only used it 5 or 6 nights in the 3 weeks that I stayed there, as due to climate change Scotland just about experienced the sunniest and warmest month of May since measurements began. From snow to shorts in a week!

The cottage holds the warmth well as long as you remember to close the doors. As I like sleeping cold I kept both doors between livingroom and bedroom closed and opened the bedroom window. Only improvement I can think of was a thinner duvet (or a choice between thick and thin) as the current one was very warm and i was constantly trying to kick holes in the duvet to stick my feet out from under to cool down.

For electricity you need to feed the meter. Just remember to keep a few pound coins handy. If you use the woodstove or if it's summer you won't need many.

Sandra knows a lot about the area and was a lovely host along with Derek, wonderful warm and welcoming couple. They met me at the bus stop at the Invercauld Hotel as I had mentioned I would arrive with the bus, and we walked the 100 meters to the cottage. They showed everything in the cottage and explained how it all worked.

A car is handy but not necessary while staying in Braemar. It makes some of the more distant walks easier to get to (like Glen Derry, Glen Callatar and Glen Ey) but there are plenty walks around the village as well. When at the duckpond, don't forget to go across the road into the little quarry - amazing view! Also don't forget to book a highland safari from braemarhighlandsafaris.co.uk. Looking down into Coire Kander on the Glen Callater tour was an amazing experience, especially if you've never been on a proper 4x4 drive before, like me.

The Co-op shop stocked all the necessaties and has plenty non-necessary stuff like snacks and drinks so I never felt the need to go to Ballater for 'big' groceries while in Braemar. I also saw the Tesco deliveries truck roaming around for those that require a very broad and specific range of groceries.Sadly the weight lost by walking was gained again because of the sticky toffee pudding the Co-op stocked.

Liked best: Close distance to public transport, shops and walks.
Liked least: The very thick and very warm duvet (but it's a very minor thing).

“definitely recommended”
Reviewed April 25, 2016 for a stay in April 2016

Castleton Cottage could not have been better for our recent stay in the Cairngorms. The location in Braemar is convenient for great local walks and trips further afield, and there are a number of good options for dinner out or evening drinks all within easy walking distance. The property itself really did have everything we could need and more, it was lovely and clean, the bed was so comfortable and the wood burner was a real treat. The owners, too, gave us a lovely welcome and were very helpful in suggesting places to visit during our stay - many thanks to them!

“Very pleasant stay”
Reviewed October 24, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Very pleasant week's holiday. The cottage was as advertised and was absolutely fine. The basket of logs for the stove was especially welcome as Braemar can get chilly in October! The owners, Sandra and Derek, who live next door could not have been more helpful and friendly - super hosts.
