Stayed here for a night before a running event at Balmoral.
Located just on the edge of Braemar and is in an ideal location for walking into town and also for longer walks in the hills.
The beds are comfortable, the hostel has a large well-equipped kitchen and a homely lounge where it is nice to relax.

We haven't stayed in too many hostels in our extensive travels but this would rate the best of them.
We chose this accommodation as it was within our budget in a town where the accommodation rates can be high.
The manager made us very welcome upon our arrival and gave us all the information we needed to make our 2 night stay full of local activities.
The bedroom was pretty much like you can expect in a hostel with two single beds which were comfortable enough.
The communal showers and toilets were spotlessly clean and there was plenty of hot water.
The kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of utensils. The dining room had plenty of tables and chairs and a lounge next door to relax in.

Quiet, clean, & helpful hostess. Comfy beds great location for hiking or sightseeing the Braemar area. Lovely old hunting lodge. We had a 6 bedded room for our family of 5. Only complaint was the lack of plugs to charge electronics for family of 5.

A well run SYHA Hostel by a Manager who provides an excellent place to stay.

While during dinner we were able to watch the Red Squirrels outside coming to feed on the food that the Hostel Manager provided.

No problem in recommending this location for one or more nights stop.

Room Tip: Not much external noise at night so all dorms & rooms should be quiet.

Stayed here with friends for one night before skiing at Glenshee.

Located just at the edge of Braemar, it is ideal for walking into "town", driving to the slopes/hills and going for nice long walks.

Beds are comfortable but quite creaky (just hope there isn't a restless sleeper in the room).

Kitchen facilities are good and great for cooking your own food - plenty space.

Sitting room is fine, plenty of board games and magazines but could use a few more seats.

Lots of red squirrels and woodpeckers in the gardens if your into wildlife.

Would stay here again.

First visit to Braemar. Private room. Good kitchen facilities with dining table in there too so lots of chat during meals. Expensive pubs nearby. Showers good and roomy.

Took all our own food so no comment on the Hostel's offerings.

Room Tip: Go for a private room-free towels.

The youth hostel is mediocre - and the breakfast was poor. The hostel needs a lot of updating and the shower and bathroom areas need a lot of attention. I paid £20 for a bed in a dorm and I guess this is a fair price but I still think that the hostel needs some TLC. But the worst thing was the breakfast. £4.50 for a few basic cereals, supermarket basic bread, cheese, basic ham, yoghurts and only-just-ok coffee. This is also laid out and you serve yourself. While some might imagine that this sounds like great value for money, it is only so if you can eat masses and if you like lower quality cereal foodstuffs. Why not cut down on the range of food and improve the quality with vastly improved bread and cereals? Added to this, when two friends who were sleeping in a campervan nearby asked politely to pay for said mediocre breakfast and join us they were told no. Not because of hotel policy but because the manager would need to "defrost more food". This made no sense as there didn't appear to be anything defrosted (unless the bread was) and there was more than plenty of food left for another two people. In fact, the manager then proceeded to clear away all the leftover food and so he must have seen how much was left. Why not extend the hostel's hospitality and invite these two people in? Why not take the extra £9, which surely must be big profit, and use this money to start some TLC work in the hostel? I just couldn't understand the need to be so inhospitable. Sorry, but this experience left us all feeling a bit like we'll not bother going to the hostel again.
