“Best Restaurant in NW Scotland.”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

Have dined here on several occasions as we have friends living locally.
The food and service is always excellent with locally sourced fish and Venison.
Alan and Fiona are wonderful hosts and have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome even when we have turned up at short notice. The staff are always attentive and the atmosphere very relaxing after a long days driving or walking.
Can't wait to visit the area again even if it's just to dine out at The Old School Restaurant.

A lot of thought, care and attention to detail has gone into creating what is much more than a very comfortable B&B. The owner( we only met one) and his young staff were very friendly and welcoming , taking time to chat to their clentele. The availability of dinner for residents was a definite plus in such a remote locaton. The food was superb and dining in the bright high -ceilinged schoolroom decorated with a few items of school memorabilia was an evocative experience !
Top marks!!

Stayed one night at the Old School Restaurant with Rooms during my tour of Scottish Highlands in July 2011.

The inn is located in the village of Inshegra with a great view to the Loch Inchard. The main building used to be a primary school and now houses the restaurant. Most of the guest rooms are situated in a modern annexe just next to the restaurant.

I stayed in room 5 which was spacious and had great views to the loch. Large king size bed was one of the best I came across during the trip. Everything was spotlessly clean. The two meals I had in the restaurant were very nice.

The owners were very friendly and helpful. I had some car trouble while there, and they managed to find me some local help. And that was on a Saturday morning!

I’ll definitely stay here again next time I’ll be in Scotland.

Room Tip: Try room #5.

The Old School House is well worth using as a base to explore this fantastic area. It isn’t actually in Kinlochbervie, it is probably about 2 miles or so back towards the main A road towards Cape Wrath. This isn’t a bad thing as it means you get a better view out over the loch without many other buildings getting in the way.

As the name suggests there is also a Restaurant on-site which only serves meals for guests, so you really don’t need to go into the village for much.

The bedrooms themselves are housed in a separate annex about 20m or so away from the restaurant where breakfast is served. So if it is raining, you will need to remember your coat!
The accommodation block itself doesn’t seem that appealing, looking a bit basic and dated, but the rooms themselves are actually much nicer than this. The room we had, which was an en-suite room with Loch view, was very spacious, easily having room for 2 comfy chairs and a table as well as the bed – which seemed particularly big and comfortable as well. It was all decorated in a tasteful way and similarly the bathroom was clean and well equipped.

One point about the room is that to lock your room you have to turn the knob on the inside of the door before you shut it, as you can't lock it from the outside!

An unexpected bonus of staying here is the quality of the food served in the restaurant, which is excellent, freshly cooked and well priced too. As they serve food only to residents, it should never be too full, or it certainly wasn’t when we were there. The food was so good in fact that we decided we would eat in the restaurant both nights that we stayed here.
Breakfast is equally good with a wide range of food, again all cooked and presented in a very nice fashion.

The staff are a real bonus, all of them friendly and well informed about local tips where to go. I would definitely recommend going to Handa Island to see the Puffins and also if you can arrange it, get a taxi up to the Cape Wrath ferry, and then walk back along the coast past Sandwood Bay to your car which you will need to leave at Blairmore car park.

Although the staff all have Scottish Accents if you are foreign there are dictionaries on the bookshelf so you can understand what is being said. If you are English speaking though you will find them all lovely and very helpful.

For the price this is an excellent place to stay and we would definitely come back.

We chose to stay here as it was convenient for our touring holiday of Scotland.
Immediately we decided to extend to 2 nights.
The food was sublime and the service superb.

I would give it 10 stars if I could !

Like its surroundings, the Old School is a solid establishment offering truely exceptional value without the glitzy frills of the big city.

My wife and I spent one night at the Old School during our two week travels through Scotland. The visuals of the local topography is absolutely stunning! Our transit down from Durness on the single track road was breathtaking. And the old School is in the middle of those vistas. Folks, you can't go wrong here.

The room was clean and very comfortable with a full-force shower facility. Although you may hear the other guests as they enter the room annex - our room was right next to the common door (room 4) - once everybody got settled it was absolute quiet. And hanging onto bottled water - forget it. The tap water is absolutely pristine so fill up your water bottles for follow-on travel right at the tap.

Meals are served in the old schoolhouse which I guess was a functioning school into the 70's. Upon our arrival, we were served coffee and cakes following our journey and given local advice on where to drive 10 minutes to see some incredible beaches. The meals themselves were were well prepared and absolutely delicious. Although Alan and Fiona did not serve the dinners - they were served by a delightful chemical engineering student - Alan did serve the breakfast and was full of knowledge of local side trips.

As others have said, this is a real gem located in a beautiful area. And as we were, you will be glad you booked the Old School.

Room Tip: Room 4 is right by the common room annex door. If you are a light sleeper and go to bed before 9 PM...
