perfect setting, quite peaceful, perfect hosts, everything you need.
The weather wasn't too bad for our stay managed not to get wet, dodging showers. The cottage is a perfect base 10 mins by car. from supermarket and train station , for Edinburgh etc.
A car is essential for seeing the sights we explored Falkirk, the Kelpies, wheel etc, two days exploring sights in Edinburgh, (by train) off peak after 9.00am -4.15, and after 6.00.
North Berwick and beyond, castles + lochs etc.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay a home from home

“Perfect ... yes that'll do.”
Reviewed June 28, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

I really could just leave it at that really but I wont.

Stayed for a week from 21 June. It lives up to all expectations that the images and other reviews build in one's mind. It is a beautiful home and spotlessly clean and tidy. There is absolutely everything you could possibly ever need in the cottage and I do mean everything.

The location is wonderful in a vert quiet and remote setting which is just so peaceful and silent at night - slept like a log and well every night.

Despite this it is close to the M8 and M9 motorways so anywhere can be got to quickly.

There's a manual in the cottage with lots of information inc nearby supermarkets, places to eat etc and manuals for all the equipment in the cottage - oven, microwave, washing machine .. etc, etc.

The owners are a lovely couple and perfect hosts.

Highly recommend this wonderful home from home ... I did not want to leave.

“Another wonderful break at Smarhus Cottage”
Reviewed April 28, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We returned for another short break because this is such a comfortable home from home and is absolutely spotless. Evelyn and Andrew are very kind and welcoming hosts who take a real pride in this perfect cottage. They think of everything that you could possibly need including a selection of toys for our little boy and Sky TV for my husband who was treated to live football. There was a lovely basket of treats for us when we arrived which was most welcome. Hope to return again for another peaceful and relaxing break.

“What a gem :-)”
Reviewed April 13, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

One of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. Central for seeing everything and everything you need in a self-catering property. The weather was also extremely good for Easter time, very warm and sunny all week!!
This cottage is a credit to Evelyn and Andrew, lots of info to help with things like nearest food shops, places to eat and things to see.
Cannot recommend this property highly enough.

“Home from Home - fabulous”
Reviewed December 23, 2014 for a stay in December 2014

My husband and I attended a wedding at "the Vu" in Bathgate and were lucky enough to find this little gem of a place for a weekend stay.

The location is off the beaten track so very private and the snow had fallen for our arrival so the views from the decking and windows were gorgeous.

The cottage itself is very well equipped and of a high spec/standard. I especially enjoyed the heated floor in the bathroom and the welcome basket.

The owners could not have been more helpful and were on hand for even the smallest enquiry (eg where's the nearest shop for milk, what is a local taxi number?).

Our stay was a pleasure, very peaceful, and would recommend to all.

“One of the best self catering cottages we've stayed in”
Reviewed November 16, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Stayed here for a week in late October 2014 with my husband and 6 year old. The photos do not lie, this place is as lovely, well kept and well prepared as the website suggests. We knew the surrounding location of the cottage having previously lived in the area, and we found it easily very late at night, from the directions provided. It's perfect for stays in the Lothian area, and for visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow, as its well placed for the train and motorways. There are plenty supermarkets within a 5/10 minute drive also. There was lighting and heating all prepared for a good arrival late at night, and in the morning we discovered a lovely food welcome basket with some nice treats. Our son was very pleased to find a box of toys, a bookcase full of games, jigsaws, DVD's, and his bedroom had been prepared with children's bedding which was such a lovely touch and gesture. I cannot give enough praise to the owner's for the condition of the interior, everything is in excellent condition, and you'll find absolutely every household item you could think of or need, there is even SKY TV. It takes a good host to gets these things right - and they really have gone the extra mile. I can't think why this is not 5 stars, it definately felt and looked like it was. The owner's themselves are a lovely couple who could not have been more helpful and friendly. We loved our week here and cannot praise and recommend this highly enough - I just hope we can get availability next time we visit as I think this is going to be a very popular choice. Just fantastic. Thank you again to the owners.

“amazing cottage in great location”
Reviewed September 2, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We have just spent a week in this superb cottage to have a holiday whilst also visiting family nearby. The cottage is perfect, it's so nicely decorated and furnished and has everything you could need. Andrew and Evelyn are lovely hosts and so friendly and helpful.
Although the cottage is in a rural location, it is literally 5-10 minutes drive to Armadale where there is a large supermarket and petrol station. Also the train station there is on the mainline to Edinburgh which is great for a day out. It's also in easy driving distance of Falkirk for the Kelpies, and so many other tourist attractions. There is a whole basket of tourist info in the cottage to help you plan days out. We had a fantastic holiday here.
