“What a gem :-)”
Reviewed April 13, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

One of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. Central for seeing everything and everything you need in a self-catering property. The weather was also extremely good for Easter time, very warm and sunny all week!!
This cottage is a credit to Evelyn and Andrew, lots of info to help with things like nearest food shops, places to eat and things to see.
Cannot recommend this property highly enough.

“Home from Home - fabulous”
Reviewed December 23, 2014 for a stay in December 2014

My husband and I attended a wedding at "the Vu" in Bathgate and were lucky enough to find this little gem of a place for a weekend stay.

The location is off the beaten track so very private and the snow had fallen for our arrival so the views from the decking and windows were gorgeous.

The cottage itself is very well equipped and of a high spec/standard. I especially enjoyed the heated floor in the bathroom and the welcome basket.

The owners could not have been more helpful and were on hand for even the smallest enquiry (eg where's the nearest shop for milk, what is a local taxi number?).

Our stay was a pleasure, very peaceful, and would recommend to all.

“One of the best self catering cottages we've stayed in”
Reviewed November 16, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Stayed here for a week in late October 2014 with my husband and 6 year old. The photos do not lie, this place is as lovely, well kept and well prepared as the website suggests. We knew the surrounding location of the cottage having previously lived in the area, and we found it easily very late at night, from the directions provided. It's perfect for stays in the Lothian area, and for visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow, as its well placed for the train and motorways. There are plenty supermarkets within a 5/10 minute drive also. There was lighting and heating all prepared for a good arrival late at night, and in the morning we discovered a lovely food welcome basket with some nice treats. Our son was very pleased to find a box of toys, a bookcase full of games, jigsaws, DVD's, and his bedroom had been prepared with children's bedding which was such a lovely touch and gesture. I cannot give enough praise to the owner's for the condition of the interior, everything is in excellent condition, and you'll find absolutely every household item you could think of or need, there is even SKY TV. It takes a good host to gets these things right - and they really have gone the extra mile. I can't think why this is not 5 stars, it definately felt and looked like it was. The owner's themselves are a lovely couple who could not have been more helpful and friendly. We loved our week here and cannot praise and recommend this highly enough - I just hope we can get availability next time we visit as I think this is going to be a very popular choice. Just fantastic. Thank you again to the owners.

“amazing cottage in great location”
Reviewed September 2, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We have just spent a week in this superb cottage to have a holiday whilst also visiting family nearby. The cottage is perfect, it's so nicely decorated and furnished and has everything you could need. Andrew and Evelyn are lovely hosts and so friendly and helpful.
Although the cottage is in a rural location, it is literally 5-10 minutes drive to Armadale where there is a large supermarket and petrol station. Also the train station there is on the mainline to Edinburgh which is great for a day out. It's also in easy driving distance of Falkirk for the Kelpies, and so many other tourist attractions. There is a whole basket of tourist info in the cottage to help you plan days out. We had a fantastic holiday here.

“An amazing cottage with amazing owners.”
Reviewed August 13, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We stayed in this cottage for a week in August 2014 having travelled up for the Commonwealth Games. Our family consists of my wife and myself with two boys aged 3 and 6. We chose this cottage as we were looking for somewhere from which we could easily reach both Glasgow and Edinburgh and this was perfect.

From the moment we arrived we were massively impressed. Two incredibly friendly hosts, Andrew and Evelyn, met us and instantly made the boys feel welcome. Upon entering the cottage, the boys were shown into their bedroom and shown a pile of toys that they would spend the week playing happily with. Inside, everything was spotless and finished to a high quality.

We have stayed in a few cottages now, and this one was by far the best. As mentioned, the quality was superb, but it was the additional extras that made it extra special - a bookcase full of books and DVDs, full Sky subscription a welcome hamper with wine and biscuits, toys, etc. You can tell they genuinely care about making their guests have a fantastic week.

Unfortunately for us, we are not likely to head back in this direction again for a while as we are based in Cornwall. However, if we are ever in the region we will not hesitate in heading back this way. In fact, the cottage itself would give us a reason to come back.

The sign beside the front door shows it has been awarded four stars. I genuinely cannot imagine what could be done to improve to reach five stars. This cottage is simply amazing.

“Wonderfully relaxing”
Reviewed July 27, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Smarhus Cottage is a beautiful little cottage, well located for both Glasgow and Edinburgh and with plenty of other activities within a short drive. The location was so peaceful and idyllic. Andrew and Evelyn were extremely welcoming and very helpful throughout the week, with thoughtful little touches like a welcoming hamper and even bringing a thinner duvet during our stay to help us cope at night with unexpectedly glorious hot weather. One issue could have been the lack of a bath as our 16 month old son gets very upset in the shower, but we were provided with a good sized baby bath which provided hours of fun and splashing on the decking in the evening sunshine. The boat trip from South Queensferry to Inchcolm Island is a must, with the Falkirk Wheel, the Kelpies and Five Sisters Zoo being good days out. We would happily stay at Smarhus Cottage again.

What an amazing cottage! Evelyn and Andrew made us feel so welcome even had lots of lovely toys for our 19 month old to play with, which kept he occupid for hours. The cottage is situated close to all the great attractions yet far enough away to be a tranquil and relaxing.

We will be back over and over again.
