“Absolutely perfect!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2010

This was our third trip to the Isle of Skye but we had never stayed at the Rosedale Hotel before. It was one of the loveliest hotel experiences we have ever had (and we have been to many, many destinations over the years).
I had booked a double-room for hubby and myself and a single room for our Canadian friend (via a secure internet site for the hotel) for two nights.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a big smile and some friendly chat and the offer of a dram of whisky or sherry. What a lovely gesture! We certainly had never had this happen anywhere else and we gladly partook. Check-in literally took about half a minute and then we were shown to our rooms with an offer to help with the luggage.
Yes, the corridors can be confusing and we got lost several times before getting our bearings. But this just adds to the charm of this hotel which is after all constructed out of four or five separate houses. We had absolutely no problems with this arrangement.
I had requested a double-room with harbour views and this certainly lived up to expectations. What a lovely view! The single room overlooked the street leading down to the harbour but was very comfortable and there was hardly any noise at night. Our friend really liked it. Both rooms were squeaky clean and very nicely furnished.
We had dinner in the hotel on both evenings since a lot of restaurants in Portree don't seem to take bookings and you'd have to wait your turn. So pre-dinner drinks in the Bosville Hotel up the road and then for our first dinner in the hotel. The restaurant is run by a separate company to the hotel (the staff there work for both the restaurant and the hotel) and the food was just delicious. Our friend and my hubby had the seafood special (for two persons) between them which included the freshest ingredients the sea would yield. They were still waxing lyrically about it several days later. Dinner the second night was just as good. Breakfast was a very satisfying affair. For a full Scottish fry-up you have to pay extra but the "continental options" were just great. You can have a fish taster platter, ham and cheese taster platter or fruit taster platter complete with croissants and rolls besides the usual toast and preserves and juices and cereals.
One thing that made this hotel stand out was the service. Not once did we see any of the waiters/waitresses or other staff frown. It was cheery smiles all around, no matter where you might meet them. There was chat and you got the distinct impression that they really cared about you. You just felt welcome in this hotel. And we witnessed some real personal attention to an elderly gentleman who stayed there.
We thought that the prices for accommodation in this hotel were very good (you'd pay about the same in a B&B) and constituted value for money.
Accommodation, rooms, comfort, food, atmosphere, location and the wonderfully friendly and accommodating staff: full marks to the Rosedale Hotel in Portree! On our next trip to Skye we will definitely stay there again.

A gem of a hotel, upon arriving you are offered some refreshment (sherry or whiskey). We had to go back outside to enter in a different door and then proceed thru the warren of hallways, stairways, twists and turns to get to our room. But the location right on the picturesque Portree Harbour is worth it. Definitely book the harbour view rooms. Breakfast was excellent, altho again finding the breakfast room was a challenge.

Before booking this hotel, we have read the rave reviews of this place, and were a little surprised that we, during the four nights we stayed here, encountered what seemed a completely standard UK three-star hotel, nothing more, nothing less - only, the price of the room was quite a lot higher than usual!

Staff were extremely friendly and nice, but the room itself was nothing to write home about - small-ish room with only one small window overlooking an ally, and a tiny bathroom. Again, it was nice enough place, and the location is great, but considering that we have stayed in a lot better hotels all over Scotland for a lot less a night, it really seemed too expensive, even considering that Portree is a popular tourist destination, and we were there in July at the height of the tourist season.

This was only a quick overnight stop on Skye but we were not disappointed. It is worthwhile paying a little extra to have the Harbour View. It's almost like the water comes into your room. Awsome ! The staff was particularly nice and friendly, honnestly the best overnight stay of our 5 day tour of the Highlands We ate at the hotel's restaurant which was OK - again, great view with OK food (nothing to write home about). The hotel gave us a list of interesting things to see on Sky and that was very helpful. Parking is an issue though.

I was staying at the hotel on business and picked it because they had a single room with a harbour view. I was not disappointed on arrival when I was offered a sherry or whisky - a lovely touch even though I didn't partake! The hotel itself is a maze of stairs and low ceilings which all add to it's charm. Although my room was perhaps not the most modern of decor I have ever seen it was clean, fresh and comfortable. I would hope that anyone who visits and feels the rooms are not to their taste/expectation will surely be won over by the excellent restaurant and hospitality.

The restaurant has a lovely view over the harbour and Fiona and Willie are fantastic and made me feel at home. I was assured my dinner was still swimming in the sea that afternoon - you can't get fresher than that! And the homemade shortbread that came with the coffee was delicious!

Others have commented that there is only a continental breakfast offered: I was told of this when I booked and it is on the website so it was no problem for me. They do offer more than just cereal as the management have responded to on one review. For me I was more than happy enough with some fruit, the homemade scone and a cup of tea!

All in all I look forward to returning with my husband and it goes to show that a hotel doesn't have to look 5 star inside for you to have a 5 star stay.

We only stayed for one night in the Rosedale but we were well looked after. Our view over the harbour was beautiful and the sunrise was spectacular as the sun rose over the hills and splashed over the sea. And by the way, we were treated to complimentary welcome dram with our room keys and after a long drive...heaven!

After a long day traveling, the welcome was outstanding. Paul Rouse and his staff are wonderful hosts; they bent over backwards to make our stay memorable. Our coach was met at the door by Paul, we were escorted to our rooms and even though finding ones way around took a little time, it added to the charm. They even carried our luggage to our rooms. Breakfast was very good, a little slow because they are remodeling but it didn't stop them from providing good service. Very quaint and well worth the stay. Views from the rooms overlooking the harbour were breathtaking. Cant wait to go there again.
