This was our third trip to the Isle of Skye but we had never stayed at the Rosedale Hotel before. It was one of the loveliest hotel experiences we have ever had (and we have been to many, many destinations over the years).
I had booked a double-room for hubby and myself and a single room for our Canadian friend (via a secure internet site for the hotel) for two nights.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a big smile and some friendly chat and the offer of a dram of whisky or sherry. What a lovely gesture! We certainly had never had this happen anywhere else and we gladly partook. Check-in literally took about half a minute and then we were shown to our rooms with an offer to help with the luggage.
Yes, the corridors can be confusing and we got lost several times before getting our bearings. But this just adds to the charm of this hotel which is after all constructed out of four or five separate houses. We had absolutely no problems with this arrangement.
I had requested a double-room with harbour views and this certainly lived up to expectations. What a lovely view! The single room overlooked the street leading down to the harbour but was very comfortable and there was hardly any noise at night. Our friend really liked it. Both rooms were squeaky clean and very nicely furnished.
We had dinner in the hotel on both evenings since a lot of restaurants in Portree don't seem to take bookings and you'd have to wait your turn. So pre-dinner drinks in the Bosville Hotel up the road and then for our first dinner in the hotel. The restaurant is run by a separate company to the hotel (the staff there work for both the restaurant and the hotel) and the food was just delicious. Our friend and my hubby had the seafood special (for two persons) between them which included the freshest ingredients the sea would yield. They were still waxing lyrically about it several days later. Dinner the second night was just as good. Breakfast was a very satisfying affair. For a full Scottish fry-up you have to pay extra but the "continental options" were just great. You can have a fish taster platter, ham and cheese taster platter or fruit taster platter complete with croissants and rolls besides the usual toast and preserves and juices and cereals.
One thing that made this hotel stand out was the service. Not once did we see any of the waiters/waitresses or other staff frown. It was cheery smiles all around, no matter where you might meet them. There was chat and you got the distinct impression that they really cared about you. You just felt welcome in this hotel. And we witnessed some real personal attention to an elderly gentleman who stayed there.
We thought that the prices for accommodation in this hotel were very good (you'd pay about the same in a B&B) and constituted value for money.
Accommodation, rooms, comfort, food, atmosphere, location and the wonderfully friendly and accommodating staff: full marks to the Rosedale Hotel in Portree! On our next trip to Skye we will definitely stay there again.
