Saucy Marys Lodge
Reviewed October 30, 2013

We stayed in Kyleakin to see the Isle of Skye. After a day of driving on narrow lanes with passing places the last thing we wanted to do was drive to dinner. So we would saunter over to Saucy Mary's and check out the daily catch. The fishing boats were within shouting distance and the seafood was fresh and plentiful. We had langoustines one night and the chef came out to teach us how to eat them (pull off the head, squeeze the tail and remove it to expose the flesh.) Langoustines take a great deal of effort for their small portion but they are tasty. We met other people traveling about and one fellow on a motorcycle gave us several recommendations for when we left Kyleakin to travel north. Very nice people and happy to be of help. A nice location with good basic seafood so fresh it may have continued to jump on the plate if I didn't eat it so quickly.

We arrived into Kyleakin at the end of the season. A lot of places were closed. We came here for lunch. The food was great. Fish and chips were excellent. A friend had the Haggis with whisky sauce. Cannot complain. Good value. Would definitely come back again.

Spent a couple of nights here while on a group trip. Rooms were roomy and neat, bathrooms were shared but very clean. Best of all, we were given free breakfast (basic, but filling) and discount coupons for dinner. The live band was very good, the food was a bit pricey but delicious and overall it was a good base to stay and explore Skye

Room Tip: Rooms that are towards the back have a good view of the creek behind the hostel

I was on a three day tour of the Highlands and we spent one day in Skye, so our group stayed at Saucy Mary's. We only stayed for one night, but it was a good stay. The hostel has a restaurant/bar and a small convenience store in it's lobby area. We stayed in a 2-bunk, 4 person room, which was very comfortable. The room was small, but we hardly spent any time there. There were traditional UK outlets, as well as those for travelers with different cords. A major plus of the room was the sink! It was very convenient to be able to brush our teeth/wash our faces in the room. There were toilets on each floor, but I think the showers were only downstairs [if I'm not mistaken]. All facilities were clean from my experience, so no complaints there. The hostel faces the water with a view of the bridge to Skye to the left and an old, weathered castle to the right. If you get the chance, be sure to visit the castle! It's a short, but swampy hike away. Wear proper shoes!

Very disappointed (and a little stunned!) at two bacon rolls for £10! Horrible dry rolls and fatty bacon which tasted microwaved. Would have complained if we hadn't already left. On the upside, it was a very pretty location and their live music band sounded good the night before.

We are a family of 5 and stayed for 3 nights. We had a room with a bunkbed and three single beds. The room was clean and most of the beds were comfortable. There were two shared bathrooms on the floor which were clean and a shared kitchen which we did not use. Towels were 7 pounds to rent with a 5 pound return deposit. The pub is downstairs and has excellent food. But it made for a very noisy night especially when they had a live performer. I would recommend earplugs. The wifi is free, but slow as in most places we stayed. The view from the lodge is beautiful and you can walk to the castle ruins nearby. We rented a car and drove around Skye so it was a bit inconvenient having to drive all the way back. We took a train when we left Skye. the train station is just over the bridge, so it was convenient. We would stay here again.

Motorbike trip with two mates round the north of Scotland so basically cheap and cheer full. Booked this hostel in advance and on arrival was very impressed with its location which offered fantastic views from the front of the hostel. I was impressed with the fact that the hostel had a shop and pub attached. The food served at the pub was excellent and very reasonably priced with an additional 20% off if you are a resident. The room we booked was a 5 bed en-suite dorm which was basic but clean and spacious enough for the bike kit. At £22 a head for a hostel I thought it was a little on the pricey side however the location/pub grub and pub compensated for this. Skye is stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit and if you are doing it on a budget then this hostel is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Live music in pub at the weekends so some rooms will have noise pollution. The five bed ensuite dorm...
