MacKinnon Country House Hotel
Ranked #11 of 11 Kyleakin B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 11, 2011

We stayed here for two days in September as a base for exploring the Isle of Skye. The hotel has an "honesty" bar, two comfortable sitting rooms, a restaurant, and is surrounded by lovely green gardens. It is right across the bridge from the Scottish mainland. The hotel serves dinner as well as breakfast, and we ate here both nights. Dinner is a leisurely affair, beginning with a menu perusal in the sitting rooms. The restaurant is in a room lined with windows overlooking the gardens. The food was good to excellent, as was the service. The room we stayed in was located a short walk from the main hotel building and was comfortable, if not luxurious. Overall, the hotel is a little shabby, but the timeworn quality adds to the appeal, perhaps. The internet worked well. The hotel has a very friendly, home-like ambiance, and the atmosphere was certainly conducive to chatting with the other guests, which adds a lot to travel. The hotel is in Kyleakin, which is some 37 miles from Portree, the true "center" of Skye. If we had wanted to dine somewhere other than the hotel, we wouldn't have had a lot of choices without a long drive.

We got married near by Eilean Donan Castle and booked into the Mackinnon Hotel for both our wedding meal with friends & family and also our wedding night . We had the Honeymoon suite which was gorgeous....beautifull four poster bed draped with tartan swags. The room was clean and very spacious and the bathroom looked like new. The water pressure is not the best in the shower due to the Edwardian pluming, but it does its job. Ian the owner and Heather the assistant manager did everything they could to make us feel welcome and at ease, going that extra mile which makes you feel very special guests rather than paying customers. The food (also cooked by Ian) was out of this world....truely delicious and everyone loved it. My Husband had the venison which just melted in the mouth and was so tender he cut it with a normal knife. I had the chicken wrapped in parma ham and stuffed with haggis and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals I have ever had. Ian is a genius! Our wedding breakfast the next morning was also perfection with plenty of coffee and juice available.
We loved everything about our stay from the honesty bar to the cosy lounge with open fire....and not forgetting Moss the dog! The only slight downer was Ian's rather ignorant and unsmiling wife who I believe is probably the cause of any of the bad reviews staffwise on here. I wander why she is in the Hotel trade as she obviously has no interest in making anyone feel welcome.....from myself and my Mom to the Best man and Groom. I would highly recommend this Hotel and the food to anyone, but it is a very relaxed 'Highland' attitude and not a posh luxuary hotel. If you insist on perfection then look elsewhere, if you love the unique and the homely then book yourself in (just deal with Heather and Ian and avoid the wife!).

For £110 a night, we expected better. The room (4) had dead spiders and webs on ceiling, en suite is so out of date, not country hotel but cheap student flat bathroom with a disgustingly dirty loo brush yuk! The Walls were paper thin we could hear people talking and snoring. Bed was two singles pushed together, which aren't very new, few springs have gone. We didn't feel very welcome when we arrived, just a receptionist who said nothing. If it was half the price then fair enough, but I was hoping for a bit more of a treat in a country house hotel.

We found the hotel very disorganised. We were given a double room instead of the twin room we had requested. Had to provide proof of our booking before it was changed and were made to feel a nuisance over it. Found the owner of the hotel very unfriendly, though other members of staff were pleasant enough. The food in the restaurant was terrible, and the breakfast, which was fine, was spoilt by being served on cold plates. Staple restaurant items such as beer or mineral water were not available. A very dissapointing experience.

My wife and I stayed with our three boys for one night in August. We had had a great day on Skye and the hotel was the perfect place for us to spend the night. We were in the Garden Lodge and had a lovely big family room. The owner, Ian, is a really smashing bloke. What a nice guy! Very welcoming, very friendly.

The hotel itself is a very grand Edwardian Country House, wonderful to look at and it has spacious lounges with books and an open fire. The dining room is a large, clean, bright room. We missed the chance to have an evening meal here, but breakfast was also served in this room. Breakfast was great, as were the staff.

The room was clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was also very good and overall we were extremely happy with our stay.

It's also in the perfect location in terms of the Skye bridge, being a few hundred yards away, so it's really easy to get back over to the mainland.

My advice would be, get on to Skye via the Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, travel up the coast, do the Skye tour and then end up at the Mackinnon for the night, before making your way over the bridge.

If we ever make it back to Skye (hope so!), we'll definitely stay again, which I guess is the acid test for any hotel!

Once again, Ian is a really genuinely great bloke who couldn't do enough for us. Thanks!

Room Tip: The garden lodge is a nice separate building from the main hotel, set in its own grounds.

To describe this place as charming would be an understatement. Scottish country living at a reasonable price for the highlands traveler on the Isle of Skye. Built I believe in 1923, with a semi formal garden, and period rooms nicely done, it has very much the feel of an old Scottish estate. While not in the greatest of repair, superior dining, and a very good staff make up for the issues that could use some work. For instance the plumbing.

There's a fully stocked serve yourself bar by the front desk, and you keep your own tab which you deliver to the front desk upon your departure. An establishment implementing that policy in the States I fear would be rushing to bankruptcy. In the rooms, a decanter of Whisky is available should you have a hankering for Scotch. Included with your room I might add.

Just about half a mile from Kyleakin's shops, pubs, and restaurants, and close to a 15 minute walk to the harbor. Quaint doesn't begin to cover it.

If you can overlook a few maintenance problems, the great food, service, and ambiance more than make up for the downside.
