“Amazing location, newly refurbed hostel”
Reviewed May 14, 2013 via mobile

The new refurb of the hostel is fantastic the new kitchen and living area have been done to a lovely standard.
The location is spectacular and there is a great walk at the fairy pools.
Staff were really friendly and welcoming and had great tips for walking.
Would recommend staying here but as the previous review said there is no sound proofing in the bed rooms!

We were the first batch of new people staying at the hostel after a top-to-bottom renovation of the whole building. Apparently the hostel was pretty worn out before.. but now it's all bright and fresh and clean. But IMO management failed miserably to address one huge problem with this hostel: sound insulation. We stayed in a two-bed room and could literally hear the French people in the next room whisper to each other, while in the other adjoining room, we could hear a bunch of rowdy British young men so clearly, we felt part of their party - without wanting to be! If you're in the area to climb any Cuilin mountain, then no amount of evening noise will undermine this hostel's perfect location (and views).

We stayed in various youth hostels (see my other reviews) on the Isle of Skye and we liked Glenbrittle most. It is in the middle of nature, far away from everything, and therefore a fantastic starting point for hikes.

Staff are friendly and helpful, the place is clean and well-equipped with a kitchen, washing and drying facilities. The hostel is very clean.

There are various dorms with approximately 8 or 10 beds (men & women separate) in them. Our dorms had a very high ceiling and therefore the air in them was much better then usually in dorms - almost no smells at all, I would say.

If you go to Glenbritte YH, try "The Old Inn" in Carbost which we can highly recommend (see my review).

This hostel is fine if you're a hiker or walker and you're used to basic youth hostel facilities.
It's quite an old building and the dorms are quite big, and there are no small rooms for couples.
It has a drying room and a laundry and the kitchen has everything you need for self catering. They don't sell much food at the reception, but down the road at the campsite shop they have a bigger selection.
The location is brilliant for walking in the Cuillin mountains, but you really need a car to get to it, as the buses only go as far as Carbost.
