“Rarely does a dining room get everything right”

Booked a table in the dining room for a special occasion, staying locally in a cottage for a weeks holiday and wife's birthday. Ambience, host, food, wine were all excellent, locally sourced food had real favour with the balance just right. A very enjoyable relaxed evening

This was our first visit to Mull and we had a fantastic stay at Highland Cottage. We had a really warm welcome and we found the owners very helpful without being intrusive. We had the Nantucket Room and it had everything in it that you would need. The bed was comfortable and we slept well.

The food was delicious. We had an aperitif in the lounge before dinner on the two nights that we were there in July. The dinner was well served by David in a very friendly manner. Food and service is important to us when we go somewhere and on this occasion it certainly did not disappoint. If you go try the mussels – they were superb. Breakfast was also very good.

We will return if we are in the area.

I won a competition and part of the prize was a two night dinner, bed & breakfast stay at the Highland Cottage Hotel. What a fantastic prize this turned out to be. The hotel is run by David and Jo who warmly greeted myself, husband and daughter on arrival showing us around the 6 bedroomed traditional, clean, homely hotel. We stayed in the Nantucket bedroom overlooking the front of the hotel which was full of character with a four poster bed and the nice touch of complimentary bottles of water and snacks. On both days of our stay we were out all day on different excursions and by the end of each day were glad to return to the Highland Cottage for a relaxing drink in the sun lounge with canapes and then a lovely 5 course evening meal prepared by Jo. I also could not fault the breakfasts where again there was a varied menu, so something for everyone. I must say David and Jo were very accommodating especially to my daughter on the food front.. All in all we had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone going to Tobermory although priced at the higher end of the market it is worth that bit extra.

We were travelling around Scotland island hopping. We enjoy good food and wine and are happy to pay for quality ,comfort and good taste .We arrived and were welcomed by Josephine a very pleasant lady who showed us to our room which was small and old and tired looking ,cluttered with lots of rather tasteless nick nacs with a view over the rear garden and the washing line ..We were the only guests for dinner and offered to eat out rather then trouble Josephine to cook but were persuaded to dine in . The dining room was old and tired and also cluttered. The food was poor quality and reminded me of cheap 1970's bistro food relying on quantity rather than quality. The wine list was so ridiculously overpriced that we declined any wine. The coffee was tasteless. In our bedroom the bedding comprised white sheets and an old brown blanket under the coverlet. The next morning we met David ,an overbearing Basil Fawlty character who served breakfast . When I paid no one asked us if we had enjoyed our stay. The price for the room and the awful meal was the highest we paid for any of the the nine places we stayed on our trip and we could not escape soon enough.

We planned a special weekend to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with close family. Having previously visited the Highland Cottage in April 2010 and April 2011, it was an obvious choice, and we booked all the rooms for the weekend 2 – 4 July. We also booked a nearby cottage for our son, daughter in law, and their four children. David, Jo, and their staff totally met expectations. The variety of rooms, all with their special little touches, the choice on the menus, perfectly cooked and using local produce, and attentiveness of the team, all combined to make the weekend memorable for all of us.

Bewildered by recent poor review but such are tastes !
Our 5 night stay was sublime and we can post negatives like the best of them.
Chose 'Ulva' from 3 available rooms, each of very high standard especially the bathroom.
Hotel run by a lovely laid-back couple who really know how to run a quality business and relate well to guests. Don't expect them to touch the forelock which maybe the reviewer below expected.
Lovely dining room and 2 fine comfortable lounges, one with a well- stocked
honesty bar - interesting library in
each.
We found dinner sublime - variety in menu and Jo only too pleased to tailor dish to individual requirements. Excellent reasonably priced wine list.
What we liked was that, after a hard day on the piste, we could spend an evening over dinner - we tend to find other places turn tables over inside 90 minutes - not here ! Also it is by no means stuffy.
Fine dining well worth the only slightly higher price and we slept like logs in the quiet comfort of our room. Room rate same as we paid elsewhere (for less) in Oban/Mull
area.
A credit to Scottish tourism - don't miss it !
Guests around us all said the same - we will certainly be back !
