“Amazing little Distillery in the Heart of Mull”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

This is a relatively small distillery compared to some others in Scotland but make no mistake - the whisky is fantastic. There is a great (and very good value) guided tour which takes you around the distillation process and ends with a sampling of some of the local whiskey's - my favourite is the Ledaig, a peaty, smoky whisky that is smooth in taste and not as medicinally flavoured as some of the Islay malts (in my humble opinion!).

A small shop on site gives you an opportunity to take home some of the golden nectar for use a little later...

Not to be missed if you are visiting Mull or Tobermory as even if you are not a whisky lover - the tour is very interesting and the distillery is quite unique.

“Nice seaside location, but nothing excellent”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

We visited this distillery as part of our round of distillery-bagging in the west of Scotland. Having finally arrived at Tobermory, we hoped for a good tour. But it seems there are some organisational issues around, as first we were left in the small exhibition and video room without knowing what would be next. After some 10-15 minutes we finally got started and went on the tour. Even though the tour did not step out of bounds and you could generally listen to it without much trouble, it's nothing to be excited about. Got shown all parts they had, including their warehouse, while finding it saddening they do not fill their casks anymore on-site. Finally, we had two drams: Tobermory 10yo was nothing special, at least Ledaig 10yo was enjoyable. But I found it strange to see that the tasting was not guided AND unsupervised - theoretically, you could help yourself to as much whisky as you wanted to. In general, we found that the service was like "we are just doing our jobs, nothing more or less". Come on, Tobermory, if it takes time and effort just to get there, you could make it certainly more worthwhile. 6.5 / 10

Hi there,

thank you for your review on TripAdvisor. We are very disappointed that your experience was not to the standard that you or we would expect or desire. We appreciate you making us part of your distillery bagging and taking the time to come to see us, we do not take this for granted. We are very proud of our distillery and the whisky we produce and at all times we look to convey that on our tours and it is disappointing for us on this occasion this was not achieved.

We will discuss your comments as a team and use them to improve our experience for future visitors especially in regards to tour processes. With regards to filling, unfortunately the size of our distillery limits what we are able to do. We are restricted by our size and are unable to fill or indeed store many casks, similar to that of many of other distilleries throughout Scotland, this has no effect on the quality or flavour of our whisky.

We are glad that you enjoyed our Ledaig whisky, which is produced 6 months of the year using the finest peated Scottish malt, while our Tobermory whisky is produced the other six months using the finest unpeated Scottish malt. Your observations highlight the uniqueness and mystery of scotch whisky where one whisky suits one palate and not another, even whiskies made at the same distillery! At all times we look to tutor our tastings and share and learn from the findings of our guests as they taste. We are disappointed that on your visit you were not tutored and left alone, this was not our intention or our own protocol.

Please be assured we enjoy and feel privileged in our roles at Tobermory distillery. It is our role to relay the story of our traditional handcrafted whisky making methods and to maximise the scotch whisky experience for all our guests' visits. We value your comments and as mentioned we will utilise them to improve our scotch whisky experience.

Thanks again for taking the time to both visit us and post on TripAdvisor.

kind regards

Peter

“You've seen one you've seen them all”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

This was your bulk standard distillery tour and tasting. You get to tour the distillery with a guide and then have the choice of two very ordinary dams of whiskey. Your tasting is not guided which is a shame.

“Slap !”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

Give yourself a slap Tobermory Distillery ! A two hour drive from Edinburgh, an hour on the ferry visiting Mull only to find the premises closed on a saturday at the height of the Scottish tourist season ! Then unable to purchase gifts locally due to the licensing laws preventing alchohol from being purchased before 10am . Give yourself another slap.

Hi there,

thank you for your review on TripAdvisor of your experience at Tobermory distillery. We are very sorry that you were not able to take the tour of the distillery on your trip. We totally understand the frustration of having travelled from Edinburgh and taking the ferry to find us closed, it is not acceptable. As a result of your comments and listening to our other visitors we are now open for tours on a Saturday and Sunday for all guests visiting our beautiful island through the tourist season.

Through parts of the summer, like all scotch whisky distilleries we have the 'silent season' when traditionally the distilleries 'close' due to lack of water and/or to carry out essential maintenance. When such maintenance takes place we will look to communicate this well in advance so as not to waste visitor's journeys and for those who still wish to visit us despite limited access at this unique time, we will be ensuring all guests enjoy a warm welcome and a dram.

Unfortunately, the licensing laws are set by the Government and we like all other licensed premises can not sell alcohol before 10am. However we are trying to ensuring that by opening at weekends we are making it as easy as possible for our guests to enjoy our whisky and our distillery.

We appreciate you taking the time to write your review on TripAdvisor and please be assured we are listening to you and that your comments will help us to deliver our goals of providing a better Tobermory scotch whisky experiences to all our guests.

kind regards

Peter

“Interesting to see and best of all taste the local whisky”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

I must start by stating I am somewhat biased as I love malt whisky.
We booked a tour and it began with a video about Tobermory whisky. This was followed by a tour of the distillery seeing the process from the deliver of raw materials to the storage in barrels. This was an informative and interesting tour and by the end we understood the process.
The best bit at the end was sampling the products. Everyone had dram whilst there was an option to pay more and a dram of each of the two whiskys they produce. I opted for the later and this enabled me to compare them and better decide which to purchase.
At the end you can purchase the whisky of your choice and at a £3 discount.
