I am so thankful that I somehow stumbled across this hidden gem, and despite this review, I hope it stays this way. Baille na cille is a special place, and not one meant for people who can't appreciate its very unique and other worldy beauty and serenity. I wish my husband and I had more time here, but we truly enjoyed our stay, the accommodations, food, and hospitality. Richard and his family have earned their stripes in this business and it shows in every aspect of the stay, from the porridge that starts cooking the night before breakfast (my favorite meal in my entire trip to Scotland and England), to the laid back congenial atmosphere of feeling at home in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The location is remote, but it is worth the trip, especially if you love beaches, history, geology, and archaeology.

Room Tip: All the rooms have fantastic views of the Uig sands. You cant go wrong.

This was a magical place where you feel you are welcomed into Richard's family. The set up for meals is really lovely as you get to meet people. Richard is a superb cook, we wished we had booked in for longer. This place must be visited if you are in the area and wanting accommodation and good food.

My husband and I stayed at Baile na Cille for just one night on our honeymoon. We had no difficulty finding it, as there are signs leading you to your destination. The views, and the beaches, are unbelievable. We had delicious venison, pâté, and some sort of amazing orange cake for dinner, and I had the best black pudding I had the whole trip for breakfast. In the evening we lounged and read and chatted with the hosts' son and other guests, petted the dog, and generally felt like we no longer cared about the busy-ness we had left behind. Rooms were spotless, furniture rustic and comfortable. No shower so we were "forced" to take baths. No, it's not a resort. It is a gorgeous and remote experience!

I have just returned from a splendid four night stay at Baile-na-Cille at the end of two weeks in the Highlands and Islands. Our stay here was the highlight of our entire holiday. I really wish that we had booked to stay longer this time, and already I am plotting another return visit next year (which, admittedly, is something I have done on at least an annual basis since our first visit in 1996). There is no other place that I would rather spend my precious annual leave.

The magic of the place is down to the hard work that the Gollin family has put into turning their family home into a welcoming guest house, where the atmosphere is that of a friendly house party. Richard and Jo are the kindest of hosts who focus on what really matters for those who want to relax on holiday: the creation an "away from it all" environment (there are no televisions or radios in the bedrooms, but plenty of books and games throughout the house), great food at breakfast and dinner, and comfortable rooms with the most amazing views of Uig Sands and the mountains. (For those who need it, there is wifi reception in the house, and it's possible to get mobile reception if you are prepared to walk a short way up the drive.)

A good indication of how much people enjoying staying here is the number of returning guests. For example, during our recent stay we met someone for whom this was his 14th annual visit, a family who have been making annual trips to Baile-na-Cille for the past 22 years, and a regular traveller to the house from New York. Those who were first-timers talked readily about when they might come "next time" and who they would bring to share this very special place.

(This is my second review of Baile-na-Cille. My first is at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g551859-d270990-r14906118-Baile_na_Cille-Timsgarry_Isle_of_Lewis_Lewis_and_Harris_The_Hebrides_Scotland.html).

Room Tip: Our favourite room is the green room.

We stayed here for a four night visit to the Isle of Lewis. This delightful b&b is situated beside a beautiful white sandy beach in the area of Timsgarry. Richard our host is most attentive and the food was delicious. Our room was in an annexe without a tv which we did not miss at all, we where too busy exploring this wonderful island. The b&b is in a remote are, and you just need to google earth to see what i mean, this was planned by ourselves as remote is what we where looking for. the roads are good, even the single track ones, from here we visited the most northerly, the most westerly, the most easterly and the most southerly parts of this Isle, the southerly parts being Harris. We where blessed with four days of glorious sunshine which really showed this island at it`s best. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

You couldn't see anything for miles around but sunlit hills and an endless stretch of golden sands. Would you believe it, there wasn't even a chip shop or pub within walking distance? OK, so there was lots of wildlife and endless peace, all very well if that's the sort of thing you like.

The room service was unreliable, and where was the night porter, the bed-turning down service, the complimentary sewing kit, and the canapies before dinner? There was no TV (Sky and wi-fi were available in the lounge), play-station or phone in our room, no spar or swimming pool and if you wanted entertainment, you had to walk, play tennis, read from the many bookcases that littered the house, play bar billiards or the grand piano or even be friendly with the host and the other guests (who were actually all quite nice).

What we missed was the frozen and packaged food one gets in motorway service stations and chain hotels, so we actually had to eat freshly cooked local produce, and foreign sounding recipies like souflees and ratatoullie, but we drew the line at the smelly cheeses and exotic fruits ugh! Other guests seemed to think the food was very good, but they must have drunk too many bottles of the inexpensive wine and strange-sounding beers that the host provided. In fairness, we would reluctantly have to concede that the rooms were clean, the beds comfortable and that the plumbing worked.

We've tried this place six times now and, if it doesn't get any better next year, we'll just have to keep coming back to complain till Mr. Gollin gets the message.

Ha. I'll do the jokes around here. Will try to have a "spar" in his bedroom by next time. From an aircraft?

Beautiful location, delightfully quirky, friendly, superb food and excellent service. (Can't comment on the value for money as I'd paid for a group trip inclusive of transport costs.) If only the weather had been better....

Room Tip: You may need earplugs in stormy weather.

What can I say about the guests of FSC who come to us? These groups are brilliantly planned and led. But often it is the guests and the group themselves who deserve all the praise. This group had just dreadful weather from start to finish and yet they all stayed positive; out with their binocs every evening trying to spot the Hebridean Sheep Shank or Lewisian Bowline.

I don't know about the marks for BNC but full marks for this group.
