Being a traveller that usually always travels to sunnier climbs, I had put no real expectations for my first trip to the western isles apart from looking forward to a very restful week on a picturesque Scottish island.
What a breath of fresh air to discovered the most amazing little haven of fantastic beaches and breathtaking scenery, delicious seafood (try Súlair at Ness, well worth the drive), art galleries, historic sites and the sun was kind enough to make an appearance for the the best part of the week!
After a short 50 minute flight from Edinburgh, the welcoming face of Morag Duncan from Hebridean Self Catering greeting us at the airport made us feel reassuringly at home straight away - not a clipboard in sight, no wading our way through queues of travellers to taxi ranks, just a friendly smile and a handshake while being led to our hire car (also organised by them), sigh how easy was that, we were now on holiday!
On the short drive to ‘Iolaire’ Morag filled our heads with many places to see and visit during our stay. Her passion for Scotland and in particular the western isles was a delight to hear and she became our ‘oracle’ of the herbrides during our stay.
Our accommodation in ‘Iolaire’ was excellent and deserving of its five star status. The house was extremely well appointed with all that you would need to make for a very comfortable stay. I planned to make my first stop the jacuzzi bath - never made the sauna, but maybe next time!
The unusual design of the property with its vaulted ceiling created a real feeling of space with the decked seating area outside the property the ideal place to watch the sun go down on an evening.
Looking for a place to escape then give Hebridean Self Catering and the Isle of Lewis a chance - you will be pleasantly surprised - an experience not to be missed - I look forward to my return visit!
