My wife and I are from New York and stayed at the Park Guest House in April. We truly enjoyed it. We had arrived in Stornoway on a rainy day after a long drive. We had planned on staying in Stornoway for only one night leaving for Ullapool and destinations South the next day. The exterior of the hotel was not promising on a nondescript side street. We had doubts as to the quality inside. We thought to leave on the early ferry the next morning but after seeing our room at the Park (room 1) we were so impressed we immediately decided to stay and take the later ferry. Really nice small modern room and bathroom. Fresh colors. Beautiful stained glass windows in the staircase leading up to the rooms. Cozy common sitting room with fireplace. Excellent food. The owner and chef Roddy was accommodating and helpful with a small selection of everyday scotch. For a small hotel in an out of the way town it exceeded our expectations. What perhaps made the entire stay was one of the staff Mary handing over a handbag we left unknowingly hours earlier as we were waiting in our car to onboard the CalMac ferry. Completely floored us.

Stornoway offers the Lews castle and grounds, Stornoway Fish Smokers for smoked haddock and Scottish cheddar cheese, Digby Chicks restaurant, drive to the beach, and Callanish stones and Morven gallery which are absolute must sees.

new rooms first class everything you need -only flaw square toilet
food very good -we were sorry did not arrive in time for dinner-think it might be worth it.
location ideal for all stornoway centre activities from Ferry to shops
very slightly pricy compared to the rest of our trip but not outrageous
a previous reviewer complained about heat-by turning down the radiator and opening a window we had it perfect

Stayed at the Park Guest House whilst on business and was massively impressed with the overall experience. First off, folk should be clear that this is a Guest House and not a Hotel, if you're looking for a 24 hour reception and the bland corporate hotel experience then go across the road to the Caladh Hotel (I stayed there on a previous visit and the management there seemed fixated on pleasing business visitors).

Arriving at the Park Guest House you're met with a warm welcome (and the sweet tooth amongst you will love nice wee touches like the stack of home made tablet at reception), the rooms are faultless - spotlessly clean, compact but well furnished. Lovely comfortable bed, flat screen TV and welcome access to free wi-fi.

The icing on the cake of the Park Guest House though is the food! Even if you're not staying here I can heartily recommend visiting their restaurant. Check out their website for a peek at a sample menu, the food I had was of an excellent standard (all locally sourced supplies cooked fresh to perfection) and was so good I had dinner there again the following evening so I could try something else from the menu. Breakfast is also first class, the melt in your mouth Stornoway black pudding is recommended.

I can't recommend the Park Guest House enough and look forward to further opportunities to visit.

Room Tip: Remember to order breakfast the evening before!

We chose the Park Guest House and restaurant because of the reputation of the cuisine and we were not disappointed. Roddy gave us a lovely friendly welcome and showed us to clean and attractive rooms with wifi. That was a real plus after a few days in the Western Isles without it. We chose our breakfast menu from the extensive choice of dishes available, then settled in a comfortable lounge before the outstanding dinner. We truly didn't expect an early bird menu at a very reasonable price that included, for example, Hebridean seafood pots topped with Mull Cheddar mash and Uig Smoked salmon on a cheese scone withlemon and dill creme fraiche as starters, and Stornoway smoked haddock risotto topped with poached egg as one of five main courses. Those are just three of a wide-ranging and very impressive menu that was served with charm and flawlessly. Our stay was very enjoyable indeed and I warmly recommend the Park Guest House.

I booked a double on-suite room at this guest house back in March based on the information and pictures on the web site. There were a mixed bag of comments on here but overall recent ones seemed at the time to be ok. We arrived to book in nice and early, these were the last two nights of a weeks journey through the Western Isles having stayed in some fantastic places during our holiday to this point. The first thing was a locked door, ring the bell three times and a very rushed/agitated chef arrived who turned out to be the owner and after checking his schedular stated that we were in the annexe out the back. He took us on a treck around the side of the house, past the kitchen and up some concrete steps to an outside door. This was a separate apartment with bed room, bathroom, lounge and kitchen that seemed to be being used as a furniture store. I think we were both so shocked that we were speechless and so he went off muttering that breakfast needed to be ordered by 20:00 and would we be dinning in the restaraunt tonight, let him know.

Once the dust had settled and the kettle been on I tied to connect to the Internet as the web site boasts "free wireless connection throughout the hotel for all guests" no ign of this in our annex then. The rooms were all very hot as the towel rail in the bathroom was pumping at full bast and could not be turned off, windows barly opened as they were onto the footpath behind the hotel. We made our way to order breakfast, tell the owner we would not require dinner and sort out the heat and internet. Breakfast was easy, dinner clearly annoyed him, Internet didn't apply to our "room" only in the lounge and the towel rail should be off! He proceeded to indicate that he was unable to move us and clearly wasn't intrested at all in our thoughts on the matter. In fact he virtually told us "don't like it get out".

We suffered a very disturbed and hot night which seemed to go on forever, we were offered a room change on Sunday but on inspection my wife decided it was small and again not representative of the website so not worth the hassle for one further night, particularly as promise was made to stop the heat. After a good days touring we arrived back to the same heat problem but opened all the windows (which would not then close) and went out for dinner.

To sum up, somewhat dated, expensive accommodation, rude manager/owner who does not seem to care, not as advertised and DON'T PAY by car as there is a 5% surcharge for doing so, the only time in 2 weeks that we found this to be the case. This stay of 2 nights took the edge off the holiday for us and we feel we were abused by this establishment. The town was busy with a car rally going on and as such we had no choice but to stay and put up with this place, we will not be going again.
