“wonderful location and good food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Hotel for two nights. The rooms are lovely , clean, and the amenities , like shampoo and soap, were great. The staff was very helpful with directions to different attractions on the Isle of Lewis, such as the Callanish Stones. The hotel is two blocks from the ferry to Ullapool, and it is easy to find. We found the breakfasts wonderful and hearty. We also ate in the restaurant one evening, and the food was delicious and the selection was varied. I had the Thai curry seafood wrap, which was fresh and delicious! My husband had the fish and chips , which was also delicious. The only complaint was the strength of the free wifi. It was next to impossible to send email. Having said that, the trip to the Isle of Skye had so many other positives, that living without wifi for two and a half days was a minor inconvenience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel.

I was in Stornoway for a weekend business trip, and was advised by a friendly taxi driver that the Royal Hotel offered a choice of eateries, and I was not disappointed. I arrived on Friday evening, about 7ish, and fancied the informal HS1 Bistro, and although I was told it was booked out (every table was "reserved" , always a good sign I think), I accepted a seat on a low couch..which was fine for me. I had the soup, and haddock mains, both delicious. The staff were friendly and efficient, and the room soon filled up with a mix of age groups, but a lively atmosphere was apparent. With a couple of bottles of some very tasty craft beer, I paid £25, which I considered very good value for the complete experience. Highly recommended. (Just a note for the owner/manager..can someone pay attention to the background music? I heard everything from Edel to The Eagles to Hip Hop, and Drum & Base...not that anyone seemed to mind...but perhaps a bit of thought here would help.) I returned on Saturday to a similar experience, booked out, but I was allowed on to one of the couches again, no complaints...just a really nice restaurant.

We got the triple room, which was very spacious, and had a view over the river/harbor. The decor was charmingly floral, in keeping with the age of the building. There were two good restaurants on the premises, and we were able to get some of the famous Lewis black pudding at breakfast. A plus was the small car park right behind the building.

If you advertise on your door that you are open until late, don't close the kitchen at 9.00. This frustration apart, I ate there twice and found both the food and service good. Admittedly, the second time I had a venison burger - first rate local meat - but the cook put cheese on it in spite of the menu stating it did not. The waiter replaced it immediately and one of the waitresses who had not been serving me came over to apologise and make sure the new one was to my taste.

Mistakes happen but it is how they are dealt with with that matters. I also ate in their slightly more up-market dining room. Again, excellent food and service.

Room Tip: Did not sleep there.

I didn't actually stay at the hotel, but dined there, they were able to fit me in at short notice, on a Saturday night. In a well appointed dining room I enjoyed a predominantly sea-food meal which was straight out of the Top Drawer. Well prepared, and well presented by friendly and helpful staff.
Well done to The Royal Hotel.

We travelled to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis to explore my husband's Scotch heritage. The Royal Hotel is an old, established hotel that serves breakfast to its guests in a lovely dining room with a burning fireplace. Very cozy with thoughtful staff and great food. The hotel is located in the center of Stornoway a short distance from the ferry; a very convenient spot It is also located across from the amazing castle and 600 acre park that are not to be missed for wonderful hiking, walking and biking paths. Just beautiful A comfortable and convenient hotel.

Stayed here recently for one night on business and wasn't disappointed. The hotel is situated on the marina in a lovely location close to the town centre, two minutes drive away from the ferry terminal. They have an informal cafe bar and also an a la carte restaurant with quieter bar area attached. Went for a couple of drinks in the cafe bar first before going through to the restaurant and found the staff to be very friendly and talkative. The food in the restaurant is top notch, especially if you like sea food. I had the mussels followed by monkfish and scallop main....superb! The rooms are very clean and comfortable and well equipped with trouser press tea/coffee and biscuits and a great big lcd tv too. Will be back.................
