Owner description: It’s not difficult to see why the Isle of Lewis consistently receives so much acclaim. From beaches and crystal clear waters that rival luxury tropical islands, to its rich history and stunning scenery, this remote and spectacular destination in the Outer Hebrides is the perfect venue for wonderful memories. Overlooking Stornoway harbour, the impressive gothic-revival style castle was built in the mid 1800’s by Sir James Matheson. Since then this beautiful building has also served as a hospital during WW2, a college, a school and now as an iconic wedding venue and luxurious holiday destination with Natural Retreats. Serving delicious hand-prepared dishes as well as local delicacies, our Storehouse cafe is the perfect place to take a moment after your exploration of the Lews Castle grounds. Enjoy a frothy coffee or two from the comfort of our unique eatery, before tucking into our tasty specials of the day. Pick up the perfect souvenir from your visit to our retail outlet 'The Outfitters', during your time at Lews Castle. From gorgeous gifts to luxury clothing and foodie treats, we've got you covered.

The castle was closed due to refurbishment. Perhaps once it's reopened it will be lovely. All we saw were the grounds (which were less than impressive due to all the university students mucking them up) and the outside was covered up with netting so we couldn't even take photo's. Unfortunate.

Lovely walks around the gardens and especially enjoyed the large bull seals basking in the harbour which can be seen pretty close up from the walls of the grounds.

I've walked around the castle grounds in all seasons with my dogs and I never tire of it - stunning views at every turn. It has everything you would want in a good walk with benches to just sit and take in the gorgeous scenery. A must for any visitor to Stornoway.

The wonderful neo-gothic Lews Castle is finally getting some much needed love & attention. With a major restoration underway I could not see the castle, but saw the amazing masonry reproduction & repairs that were being completed. The grounds, flora & fauna are beautiful & you can see what a very beautiful garden it would have been in it's hey day.

This Victorian pile sits on the hill above Stornoway harbour and is in a cracking, imposing spot.

It is, however, best admired from the town. Sadly it has been disused for many years and is in a poor state of repair. Look through the windows and see the sorry state of the interior.

The good news is that the council have found some money and have just commenced works to make exterior repairs to get the building weatherproof. The plan is that once this is done the interior will dry out and this will then be repaired and the building used again.

Let's hope it all works out as it would be a crying shame to lose this building - it should never have been allowed to deteriorate to this state.
