“Great base for exploring Harris snd Lewis!”
Reviewed October 2, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We chose Cliscto because it looked like it would be a good base for a few days exploring the island. We were a little apprehensive that it was a way from Stornoway, but (a) 35 minutes drive isn't really far- and (b) we were bang smack in the middle of the really interesting sites like the blackhouses, the broch and the standing stones. Oh - the rental, you ask? Right from the first contact with Eleanor things went smoothly. Clear directions got us to the door no trouble - but we would not suggest arriving after dark as it could be a bit tricky. Well equipped, clean, warm.. what more could we ask? A bottle of wine and a lovely cake on arrival perhaps. Done at Cliscro.

Cliscro is a lovely, comfortable cottage in Carloway. The views from the cottage are magnificent. It's on its own so completely private, but a short walk away ( just over a mile) you reach the Black House Village and there are a couple of craft/ art houses to visit too. The magnificent and awe inspiring Callanish Stones are a short drive away- do not miss! It's really easy by car to explore Lewis and Harris and I'd recommend visiting Great Bernera and the beach there, Luskentyre beach, Harris, the Ionaire disaster memorial, Stornoway, the Red River Distillery, Uig, the Carloway Broch, the Black House Village and the Isle of Harris tweed shop & distillery in Tarbet. There is also the eagle observatory if you wish to spot the majestic birds of prey. We saw them too, flying the ridge we could see from the cottage garden.
Eleanor welcomes you with great warmth and her home made victoria sponge is yummy and the bottle of wine is a wonderful welcome gift. Our dogs loved this break- as did we. The cottage is pristine, Eleanor is lovely and the Hebrides are magical. What more could you ask for from a holiday?

“Well-quipped in a good location”
Reviewed June 30, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Well-equipped, in a good location for visiting many of the beaches and attractions. Good roads to Stornaway for the ferry and any necessary shopping. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with its lovely dog-proof garden and amazing views . Spacious lounge , dining room and bedrooms make it a really good place to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility the location provides.Friendly helpful owners and lovely cake!

“Went back again, treated like old friends”
Reviewed March 13, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Returned there last December and this time knew what to expect. Loved that fact that we were treated like old friends. The timing due to the winter storms and rain could have been better.

“Superb base”
Reviewed October 21, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Fantastic base for visiting all the local sites. Cottage itself was very well equipped, clean, spacious and warm. The owner Eleanor was very welcoming and even left a home made cake, eggs and wine for us. Would heartily recommend staying here if looking for a tranquil break.

“Amazing”
Reviewed September 17, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

This is hands down one of the best cottages I have ever stayed in. It was very spacious, well decorated and had everything you could really need. I am so used to staying in cottages where they don't supply you with anything that I was pleasantly surprised at just how much Eleanor provides for you. The Golden Eagles were out flying around to greet us as we arrived which was brilliant. The area where the cottage is situated is so peaceful and quiet that I wished we hadn't had so many activities planned and we had spent most of the week in the cottage. Eleanor came to greet us when we arrived and she was so lovely and helpful. Even when the pipes started making a noise and I e-mailed her as I was worried about it she had her husband round in 5 minutes to ensure everything was ok (which it was). I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone and everyone and it's so nice having such nice accommodation that allows dogs.

The only thing I would say is about getting food shopping in. We found it difficult to find places to buy food and really the main place is Stornoway which is a 30 - 40min drive away. There are a few community shops and the closest one we found was in Shawbost.

We were also lucky enough to see the northern lights from the garden of the cottage. The pictures I have attached do NOT do it justice, it was utterly amazing! The amount of stars visible to the naked eye on a clear night from the cottage is also amazing with the milky way clearly visible. We lay in bed and watched the stars for a while through the skylight in the bedroom which was fantastic!
