This stone cottage is beautiful inside and out. It is so well equipped and Val has it kitted out with all the necessities so you really don't need to bring much. The cottage is very comfortable and very warm. We didn't get a chance to put the log stove on at all. Val is a brilliant host and even cooked up some lobster and crab and then showed us how to break it up. She was always contactable and on hand for anything you needed. The area is lovely and so handy for the Black Houses, Broch and Callanais Stones. We visited both the nearby beaches but avoided swimming at Dalmore due to the issues with the riptide. Our teenagers loved bodyboarding at Dalbeg and we managed down to Luskentyre aswell.
This was my second visit to the stone cottage and I look forward to going back again. The combination of a really high standard of accommodation and unbeatable hospitality is just fantastic.
The cottage is beautiful and really well appointed. It is so comfortable and welcoming that it's easy to instantly relax and start enjoying the view. The attention to detail and the small touches in the cottage, with everything you could possibly need, make it very very easy to enjoy.
I can't praise the owners enough for their kind and generous hospitality it's clear from all the reviews that they make everyone so welcome and I can only add to that with my thanks for a really really lovely holiday. Val and Calum, the cottage is beautiful and a great pleasure to visit but you make it a special place. Thank you!
Just spent a week in this fantastic warm cosy cottage and from the time we arrived and the welcome we received from Valarie and Calum was truly warm and friendly.
The attention to detail Valerie and Calum go to makes your stay that bit more special, with the home made cakes and scones, lamb in the freezer, a bottle chilled white wine in the fridge, a bottle of red wine along with a dram or two of whisky, a big thank you to Calum who showed me how to dress a crab and lobster.
The cottage has everything you will ever need from really quick internet, quality kitchen utensils, great library of book, CDs and DVDs, log burner with peat and logs provided. The garden is a perfect sun trap and great if you have a dog being fenced in. Our two dogs had a great time.
The location of the cottage is in walking distance from Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, and a short drive away is Dalmore Beach and Calanais Standing Stones. The cottage is only 23 miles from Stornoway where you can get your groceries once you get of the ferry.
Looking forward to our next trip to An Taigh Clach and catching up with new friends Valerie and Calum
Great location, local beaches amazing, must see attractions close by, now the best bit, the cottage is amazing, the owners, Val and Calum were wonderful hosts and can't thank them enough for their attention and kindness throughout our stay.We will he back.
Our fifth visit to An Taigh Clach. The welcome from both Calum and Valerie was outstanding. The house is very comfortable and well appointed, we love it.
Wonderful to awake to bird song and watch the lambs frolicking over grass covered stones from the comfort of the spacious lounge. Altogether the views are astounding, the colours and light phenomenal. The comfort of a chilled white wine, a good red and a very grand malt on arrival was much appreciated. The home baking did not last long.
We had a glorious week of warm sunshine, the air is soft and the water to drink is sweet.
The beaches of Lewis and Harris are extraordinary and beautiful.
We will be back.
I think this was our 6th stay at An Taigh Clach. It's everything we want from a holiday home - VERY clean, super cozy (with a proper log burner with plenty of logs/peat provided), always a great welcome (with flowers/home baked food/wine/whiskey AND a freezer of local lamb etc!!!) and it's at the center of all our favorite Lewis locations.
Thank you once again Valerie and Calum - we will be back! :-)
My wife, myself and our two dogs stayed here for one week, mid-September
2017. Our main problem when finding somewhere to stay during holidays are
always the dogs, as many decent-quality lets do not allow pets. This here
is one of the relatively few exceptions in this price and quality range.
This was our first trip to the Outer Hebrides. We've hovewer been to Skye a
few times, so we knew what (and what not) to expect, in general.
The owners, Valerie and Calum, are extremely nice and helpful, always happy
to give assistance and advice, and going out of their way to help. Calum
even taught me how to prepare crab and lobster (which they organised for us
as well). They also provided useful instructions in advance for how to get
here. The place is just over a half-hour drive from the big city, bright
lights (no, not really...) that is Stornoway with all its amenities, in
particular the two large supermarkets - the only ones on the island (there
are some few small shops elsewhere). Notice that most everything is shut on
The house itself is lovely, and relatively recently refurbished. The front
part contains the living room and kitchen, with marvellous views. There are
two comfy sofas, some smaller tables, a dining table, and the kitchen
itself. The latter has oven, hob, washer/dryer, microwave, toaster, kettle,
all the little gadgets and tools you would expect, and more. There are some
basic groceries in the cupboards. I genuinely haven't missed a thing during
my stay there. Heating is via a wood/peat fireplace in the living room
(fuel is provided generously), or alternatively electric heaters on the
walls. Either will heat up the place in no time at all. Much to my
surprise, there's even reasonably fast fibre broadband; quicker than at
home, as it were. There's also a comprehensive little library with maps and
some local interest books, plus some games.
We enjoyed our stay there tremendously. Only thing is I wish we'd planned
for two weeks instead of just one.
The weather this time of the year is best described as variable; be sure to pack one or two good rain coats. It certainly doesn't rain all the time, but a proper shower can soak you good in no time at all. The wellies proved very useful as well. (On the plus side, there are hardly any midges left.) Be sure to book your ferries well in advance.
We've fallen in love with Lewis & Harris, and we will definitely be back - not just to the island, which is just as beautiful but less crowded than Skye, but to this very house, if at all possible - it's the perfect home base for exploring the island!
