We have just returned home from our stay at An Taigh Clach and are already planning our next visit!

The cottage is just beautiful with every home comfort imaginable. The extras provided by Valerie and family really added to the warm and homely feel.
When we arrived to the fire burning, a dram of whiskey and beautiful home baking (Val's empire biscuits are the stuff dreams are made of...) we knew we were in for a relaxing stay.
After seeing An Taigh Clach's website we had high hopes for the accommodation but I can honestly say it surpassed all expectations. We found the cottage to be slightly bigger than expected, our party were 3 adults & a 6 month old baby and we never once felt we were under each others feet!

The cottage is located in Carloway which, in our eyes, was a perfect base to do sightseeing etc. The incredible beaches are just minutes away, as are the Gearrannan Black Houses.
The fact of knowing we were returning to such comfort and luxury made the day trips all the more enjoyable.

We honestly could not think of a single thing we would change or could have been improved on.
Can't wait to be back!

“Fabulous Scottish hospitality on the Isle of Lewis”
Reviewed September 17, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We have recently returned home from a wonderful two week long, family holiday on the Isle of Lewis. We arrived at 10pm to An Taigh Clach and were given such a warm welcome from Callum and Val, who had the log fire burning, wine chilling and a lovely selection of freshly made cakes. The accommodation was of a very high standard and the amenities in the kitchen were so carefully considered, leaving us feeling very much at home. The freezer full of locally reared lamb was a real treat as we chose to eat in each evening and the children were really excited to try out the fresh crab claws which Val cooked for us during the second week. Callum and Val were on hand to give us local interest advice which was great as this was our first trip to Lewis. Although the weather was mixed, we were able to get out and about every day and visited almost every beach on the islands of Lewis and Harris! Our dog came on this holiday with us and loved her holiday house too! Thank you so much Callum and Val and hope to visit again soon.

Reviewed August 29, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We have stayed in many rental villa's for our family holidays over the last few years and this rates as one of the best.
Valerie and Calum MacDonald were fantastic in recommending a very good car hire company and the directions they gave were easy to follow for the property.
On arrival we found home baking supplied by Valerie which were much appreciated. The fruit scones in particular were a favourite.
The cottage was clean and cosy. We were supplied with a wifi connection - much needed for a teenager with an i-pad. The kitchen was well supplied with every item you would require to cook with. Valerie offered to shop for food supplies for us, but it was easy to find a Tesco in Stornaway before travelling west - but it was good to know.
There was a Shower room instead of a bathroom, and the shower was of a very generous size and was a power shower. Beautiful Hebridean soap and fluffy towels provided.
Calum and Valerie provided lots of information of what activities and sights there are to visit and my boys loved helping with the sheep. This is a cottage and area that lets you unwind as a family. Will be booking again.

“If Valerie and Callum did hotels it would be the best hotels in the World”
Reviewed August 26, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

You instantly get the sense that Valerie, Callum are very grateful and very proud to have you staying at their holiday cottage. There is no expectation from them that the breathtaking scenery of Lewis alone is going to make your holiday. The conversion they have done on the former croft is remarkable, and rightly so the finish is faultless. Such thought, and attention to detail has gone into every aspect of this wonderful conversion. The thought, and attention continues throughout your stay believe me they have thought of everything, everything to make your stay as relaxed, and carefree as possible. Is it the lighting of peat burner before your arrival, the welcome pack; whiskey, lamb, fruit, wine, and shortbread, that gives you a sense of appreciation, No its not about any of that there is a genuine care from them that your stay is perfect. I get the sense that if it wasn't that they would be feel a sense of responsibility for that.
You leave with the feeling that you have made friends on the Isle of Lewis, and that they look forward to seeing you again. To put into words "My Best Holiday Cottage Experience Ever" until the next time.

If you are thinking that it is a bit suspicious that this place has so many great reviews learn to be more trusting !

It is the best holiday cottage we have ever came across !

My family which includes 2 x 8 year olds stayed here recently for a week. Based upon our experience and the positive feedback from previous reviews I think you would struggle to find better holiday accomodation anywhere !

The owners are very helpful, the accomodation is excellent and the location is stunning !

The house is located in the village of Carloway on the west coast and is perfectly positioned for exploring Lewis and Harris by car. Gearrannan Village and Carloway Broch are within easy walking distance. There is also a teffific coastal path offering great views in all directions. The two nearest sandy beaches, Dalmore and Dalbeag are less than 15 minutes way by car or two hours to three hours walk north along the coastal path.

Be aware that the nearest petrol station / shop is 15 minutes drive away and they are closed on Sundays !

“Beautiful, relaxing, luxurious place to escape everyday life”
Reviewed July 12, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

From our initial enquiries to our departure, Valerie was extremely helpful and friendly without being intrusive. We had booked the cottage for a three day romantic getaway away from the hustle and bustle of city life and we were definitely not disappointed.

The cottage is easy to find, has ample parking and being warmly welcomed by Valerie, a peat fire, home baked scones and cakes and dram of whisky was a real pleasure. The cottage has stunning views from the living room, which is cosy but modern and has everything you need whether you want to relax and watch a DVD or read one of the books supplied about the local history of the Western Isles. The large kitchen is well-equipped with everything you can think of and the bottles of wine and lamb that Valerie left us were a lovely touch. We enjoyed lovely weather when we were there and were able to sit outside and eat dinner whilst we watched the sun go down. The bathroom and bedroom were also of a very high standard and spotlessly clean.

The cottage was ideal for us - cosy and homely for the evenings when we wanted to just chill out and a good location to travel to nearby landmarks such as the Standing Stones of Callanish and the stunning beaches.

We had a fantastic holiday at An Taigh Clach and would recommend it to anyone staying in Lewis - whether you are a family or a couple. It's one of the best places we've ever had the pleasure of staying in.
