“Beautiful house and a very warm welcome”
Reviewed November 29, 2011 for a stay in July 2011

I stayed at An Taigh Clach with a group of teenage musicians who were rehearsing for a forthcoming tour. The house is in an inspirational, beautiful setting and Valerie made us feel very welcome leaving local lamb from the croft in the freezer, as well as homemade baking and a welcome dram for the adults! I would love to go back for a family holiday!

“Fabulous welcome - everything you could possibly want is provided”
Reviewed November 28, 2011 for a stay in November 2011

A great location and a house that allows you to see what the weather is doing so you can work out which direction to head in - very important for photographers. The house is beautifully furnished with lots of thought given to the details. It was cosy despite the strong winds. Certainly no problem keeping warm in November. The lamb and scones waiting for us were also a special touch. We would love to return another year.
Some lovely bays very close by - see photo below.

“Excellent accomodation, great location and warm welcome”
Reviewed November 28, 2011 for a stay in July 2011

An Taigh Clach is a beautifully converted former croft that has been furnished to a very high standard throughout. The open-plan living/dining area is double-glazed on three sides and offers beautiful views across the fields to the mountains in the distance. The kitchen is very well equipped with high quality crockery, utensils, etc. The shower room is beautifully fitted out. The bedrooms are not large but like everything else in An Taigh Clach, are finished and fitted out to very high standard. The welcome from the owners, the MacDonalds, was a very warm one, with freshly baked scones with jam and cream, a wee dram and a freezer full of delicious lamb from the farm.
In terms of location, Carloway is within easing driving distance of all Lewis' major attractions - the Callanish stones, Dun Carloway broch, the Butt of Lewis, the beaches of Uig, etc. Stornoway is less than an hour away by car (or even by bike - 16 miles or so along the single-track, almost traffic-free Pentland Road).
Highly recommended!

“Warmest welcome and fond memories of 'An Taigh Clach'”
Reviewed November 4, 2011 for a stay in October 2010

Could only manage a 4 day stay but what a 4 days. The children loved every minute they were there from the hectic day trips to the cosy nights in around the fire. The cottage is superbly finished and is an ideal location for trips and tours around the island. I have stayed in many rental cottages with children and this one is by far the best so far.
The owners welcome is second to none. Trust me if you have a holiday here you will return.

“An Taigh Clach - perfect for all kinds of holidays”

We ventured over to An Taigh Clach in darkest February but the warmth of our reception was second to none! The MacDonalds were very friendly and welcoming! We loved the lamb, the scones, crowdie and homemade jam were delicious and the drinkers appreciated the drams left too.

The cottage is well situated for exploring the island and the accommodation was excellent -we were all very comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and the standard of cleanliness was extremely high. We also appreciated that there was a comfortable outhouse for our dogs which meant they could accompany us and enjoy the outdoors too.

All in all this holiday cottage is ideal for a walking holiday, cycling or just a romantic getaway. In this case, one size really does fit all! We intend to go back!

“Truly amazing”
Reviewed October 25, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

We rented this tastefully converted property for two weeks. When we arrived at the house it certainly matched the description we had read and the owners gave us a warm welcome. The inside and outside lights and the television were switched on and the peat fire was burning merrily. Valerie and Callum MacDonald showed us around the property and introduced us our "welcome pack" which consisted of: a small caraffe of malt whisky, two bottles of wine, half a lamb which was oven prepared and frozen, a plate of freshly made scones, a jar of homemade raspberry jam and a dish of crow die, all absolutely delicious. The house seemed to contain everything a person could possibly require, it had certainly been well thought out. At the end of the first week we received a bag of crab claws and yet more whisky, wine and a selection of Valerie's delicious scones. Valerie and Callum were on hand to answer any queries and by the time we left I felt that we had made new friends. I can't recommend either the cottage or them highly enough.

“Great Summer Break”
Reviewed October 14, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We stayed for 2 weeks in An Taigh Clack in August 2011. We really enjoyed our stay and would thoroughly recommend this accommodation to other families. During the first week we wore our shorts (!!) and enjoyed a BBQ. We spent many late afternoons sitting outside and playing the outdoor games provided, whilst enjoying the view. The kids (aged 10 and 7) loved the swing.

We really appreciated the outdoor shed for the bikes, the peace and quiet, watching the sheep, the fantastic log burning stove and the well-equiped facilities.

We couldn't fault the hospitality offered by the Macdonalds. They showed us the crofting life, taking us to manage the sheep and cut the grass. Also being a *private* let we enjoyed a higher standard of provisions than multi-unit sites ie we had ample crockery provided, multiple sharp kitchen knives, endless logs/peat and other useful kitchen basics like cling film and foil.

The rural location was good, although Stornoway was less than an hours drive away. There was also a supply of local visitor attractions to do. I'm not a fan of archeologicical sites, but the Callanish Stones are just brilliant - far better than other isles off the NE of Scotland, in my opinion! Also, forget sharing a beach with joe public. On Lewis you can enjoy a beach to yourself!

All in all a good holiday. The kids liked it and we were all reluctant to leave.
