Eleanor and Jim have two rooms, one for a couple and one larger. We stayed in the former. It is bright, pleasingly furnished, newly decorated, and has many mod-cons including dvd player, hair drier etc. The bed was most comfortable and the linens crisp and smooth. The bathroom is huge with a modern shower with good water pressure.
When I learnt that the house was the first on the road from the ferry terminal I was a bit concerned, but I need not have worried -- the walls are thick and it was most peaceful. Indeed it was convenient to drive off the ferry and be in our room within one minute. The breakfast is excellent and large and is sufficient to keep one going the whole day. I would stay again and recommend it wholeheartedly.

If you are looking for an immaculate, comfortable, peaceful, spacious and well-placed B&B in Port Ellen, then look no further. 40 Pier Road is all of the above and more, and is literally 20 steps (the very first house) from the ferry on which you will arrive. Jim and Eleanor are 2 local characters who can provide all the information you may require, and have created 2 beautiful 'suites', comprising large bright bedroom with sitting area, delightfully large and spotless bathroom, plus a wardrobe/dressing area. The breakfasts comprise all you would wish for, from traditional bacon, eggs etc to scrambled eggs with salmon, as well as fresh fruit juice, cereal and all the trimmings, and all beautifully presented. It is in a perfect location for exploring Port Ellen and beyond. So, why look anywhere else?!

This is a wonderful B&B run by Eleanor and Jim, two local people who share their wealth of Islay knowledge with you. We had a fantastic stay - suite was spotless - breakfasts brilliant and plentiful. Perfectly located for the Port Ellen ferry and the harbour with prawn and scallop boats unloading - Toby the seal made many appearances! Eleanor and Jim bent over backwards to be helpful and added that extra touch of local knowledge to ensure we got the most from our stay. Must go back!

This is the B&B of your dreams, there's really nothing more you could possibly ask for. One thing is a bit confusing: the address. But once you've found it, you are given the royal treatment by the very nice couple that run it. The room is spacey, the beds are comfy and the kitchen is well-equipped and at your disposal. We want to go back!

We stayed at 40 Pier Road for a 3 night trip to Islay to visit the distilleries and enjoy some walking.
We had very good weather and saw Islay at its very best especially during our trip to the Oa where we sat in the sun watching seals on the beaches below the cliffs.
The room we stayed in, or I suppose it could be called a suite because we had so much room, was comfortable and pleasantly decorated, and had a very smart bathroom. There was a lot of attention to detail such as fresh milk with the hospitality tray rather than small cartons of the long life stuff!
And the breakfast was fabulous - beautifully cooked - and with fresh croissants on the day we left!
Jim and Eleanor made us very welcome and gave us ideas for trips which was invaluable when we had so little time. And of course we only needed to walk to the pub which is a bonus on Islay.

We were lucky enough to stay here for a few days over the Jazz Festival weekend with friends, so we basically had the upper floor to ourselves, and it was like being at home, only better. Jim's breakfasts are incredible, and both Jim and Eleanor bent over backwards to get us bookings at distilleries and horseback riding, etc. They are both very knowledgeable about the whole island (and beyond!), and very helpful in steering tourists in the right direction.

One of the many bonuses of this B&B is the communal kitchen with access to a fridge for storing perishable goodies. The rooms are airy and comfortable, the bed and en-suite bathroom perfect. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend 40 Pier Road to anyone traveling in this beautiful neck of the woods. Well priced for the service and location.

Also, we had great curries from the restaurant on the main street, but we heard it was closing in the winter...hope not permanently.

All in all, a top class experience, can't wait to return!

We had a most pleasant stay on Islay at 40 Pier Road. Our welcome briefed us on where we might go and there were excellent practical arrangements made for trips using local buses, ferries and even bikes. Food and accommodation were of a very high standard. Highly recommended.
