This is the B&B of your dreams, there's really nothing more you could possibly ask for. One thing is a bit confusing: the address. But once you've found it, you are given the royal treatment by the very nice couple that run it. The room is spacey, the beds are comfy and the kitchen is well-equipped and at your disposal. We want to go back!

We stayed at 40 Pier Road for a 3 night trip to Islay to visit the distilleries and enjoy some walking.
We had very good weather and saw Islay at its very best especially during our trip to the Oa where we sat in the sun watching seals on the beaches below the cliffs.
The room we stayed in, or I suppose it could be called a suite because we had so much room, was comfortable and pleasantly decorated, and had a very smart bathroom. There was a lot of attention to detail such as fresh milk with the hospitality tray rather than small cartons of the long life stuff!
And the breakfast was fabulous - beautifully cooked - and with fresh croissants on the day we left!
Jim and Eleanor made us very welcome and gave us ideas for trips which was invaluable when we had so little time. And of course we only needed to walk to the pub which is a bonus on Islay.

We were lucky enough to stay here for a few days over the Jazz Festival weekend with friends, so we basically had the upper floor to ourselves, and it was like being at home, only better. Jim's breakfasts are incredible, and both Jim and Eleanor bent over backwards to get us bookings at distilleries and horseback riding, etc. They are both very knowledgeable about the whole island (and beyond!), and very helpful in steering tourists in the right direction.

One of the many bonuses of this B&B is the communal kitchen with access to a fridge for storing perishable goodies. The rooms are airy and comfortable, the bed and en-suite bathroom perfect. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend 40 Pier Road to anyone traveling in this beautiful neck of the woods. Well priced for the service and location.

Also, we had great curries from the restaurant on the main street, but we heard it was closing in the winter...hope not permanently.

All in all, a top class experience, can't wait to return!

We had a most pleasant stay on Islay at 40 Pier Road. Our welcome briefed us on where we might go and there were excellent practical arrangements made for trips using local buses, ferries and even bikes. Food and accommodation were of a very high standard. Highly recommended.

I can only agree with the other reviews of this B&B - I can quite honestly say this is the best B&B I have ever stayed in - and I am a strict critic of accommodation.

EVERYTHING was perfect- 60 second walk from the ferry port. Eleanor the owner was excellent with everything we needed.

The accommodation itself was outstanding, spacious, spotlessly clean etc.

I would recommend without hesitation. I can't imagine there is a better or friendlier place to stay on Islay. You will not be disappointed.

What a wonderful stay at 40 Pier Road! My husband and I plus another couple rented out both rooms for 5 days to visit the Distilleries and the scenery in Islay. Eleanor and Jim are the perfect hosts; Eleanor was absolutely a saint assisting me with ferry information, arranging the tours for us (private, no less!) and recommending places to eat. Their house is immaculate; the guest rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, are located on the second floor separated by a eating/kitchen room. Breakfast is eaten at the communal table and you have the option of preparing your own food (other than breakfast). Each room has a sitting area with windows overlooking the harbor or garden, with a tea and cookie tray. There is a TV and CD player with a wonderful selection of Scottish disks. The Inn is conveniently located from the Ferry (2 minutes or less!) and there was no problem with hearing or physically running into embarking or disembarking traffic. Islay is a gem and so is 40 Pier Road.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in mid September. Room was light and airy with seating as well as sleeping area. Décor tasteful – not a swirly carpet in sight – with very smart and clean bathroom en suite. An added bonus was access to kitchen. Plenty of local info available – printed and verbal. Breakfasts were great with fresh fruit (no tinned grapefruit!), home made bread and extra finishing touches to accompany ‘the works’. Our main mission was to get round the distilleries and this was a good base (also for return ferry). There isn’t much in the way of on-foot dining in Port Ellen, although it’s not far to Bowmore/Bridgend and beyond.
