Stayed for four nights on business with colleagues. Rooms were amazing and the large bathroom with bath and separate shower was lovely. Very clean, modern and cosy. The staff were very friendly and they were extremely helpful. Breakfast was lovely and we dined in the restaurant every night. Food was first class and I would recommend the crab cakes as they were awesome. I really hope to visit again soon as I had a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely but if you like a separate bath you must specify as all en suites are different...

Took my father-in-law for his birthday lunch to the Islay Hotel today. Offering a festive lunch @ two courses for £10 - the most amazing value, and quite the best lunch we've had on the island in the past few months. New chef since our last visit, and a great improvement. Not everyone can produce a baked fish dish with excellent flavour and perfect texture, but that's what we (and the lady at the next table) enjoyed - and the veg were equally perfect (and hot!). The creme brulee with cointreau-soaked oranges I had for pud was also superb. Even the music was right! As our neighbouring diners said "you couldn't fault it". Why there were so few other diners there to enjoy this feast is a mystery. Their loss!!

Port Ellen is quite a small place, so it is good that it has the Islay Hotel. Refurbished not too long ago, it is bright and comfortable. My room was pretty big and quite comfortable. The bathroom was big too, with a jacuzzi bath. It's not really appropriate for a short stay, I think, but I had to give it a try!
The restaurant provided a reasonable range of good quality food and the bar was well-stocked with malt whiskies - some astonishingly pricey. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would happily stay there on another visit to Islay.

Thank you for your review. Glad you tried out the jacuzzi it's great after a heavy day of distillery visits and before a relaxing dinner in our restaurant. We do have some very rare Islay malts which carry a high price but they are once in a lifetime opportunities to taste and enjoy.
Look forward to welcoming you to the Islay Hotel

we recently stayed two nights at this hotel and the accomodation, food and staff were all excellent. The refurbishment of the hotel is amazing as I use to have the occassional drink in the old Islay Hotel and to be truthfull it was a dump. The food is a bit pricy but it is worth it for a wee special occassion. Roland the new owner was always buzzing about and was very pleasant and welcoming. All in all a great weekend, although Islay itself has not a lot to do unless you are into distilleries in a big way

Roland is very proud of his achievement here and I would like to thank you for your kind words. It has taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get where we are now and I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Should you prefer other activity than the world famous distilleries there is also one of the top links golf courses in the world, some of the best wild life and nature in Scotland, great walks, lovely beaches, fishing, sea safaris, horse riding, cycling on and off road so you can see why the residents of Islay are always smiling. It's a great place to be.

We arrived at the Islay Hotel after driving from England through the night, we were greeted by helpful and friendly staff. Our room was huge with great views over the bay, the bathroom out of this world ,sleek, stylish and a beautiful deep tub, just what we needed after the 9 hour journey! We spent our girlie weekend eating, laughing and drinking all enhanced by the attentive care from the staff and owner, oh and some funny moments whilst lost in rain and hailstones searching for Soldiers Rock! The food was amazing, great atmosphere in the restaurant, yummy cakes and coffees in the bar during the day. This Hotel has its quirkiness, it leaves you with warm memories. Well worth a visit/stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to have an individual look, and are to a high standard, ours looked out over the...

We had been hoping to stay when we visited Islay, but there were no rooms available on those dates. However, we were curious to see the renovation and refurbishment (and if the service had improved from previous reviews with the ongoing training) so stopped in for late morning coffee.

From what we saw of it, the hotel is lovely with tasteful and relaxing decoration. We were greeted immediately by a friendly and helpful staff member, who directed us into the bar area, which is bright and airy with a relaxing feel to it. We were quickly joined by another friendly member of staff who took our order and invited us to take a seat and she would bring our drinks over to us.

Whilst at the bar, we had spotted a selection of cakes and biscuits, so when our coffees arrived, we quickly added a fruit slice and a piece of millionaire's shortbread to our order. These were delicious, but (and here comes my only criticism) I was surprised to discover that the millionaire's shortbread contained carmelised peanuts! I personally loved this addition and the added texture and taste it gave to the cake/biscuit.

However, had I been a nut allergy sufferer, this could have had disastrous consequences! There had been no prior warning about nuts, either from the staff member or from a sign at the cake display. Could I please suggest that the hotel and staff keep this in mind for the future, for the sake of themselves and their customers?

Otherwise, the coffee and cake were all delicious and reasonably priced and the service and surroundings very good. I would recommend a visit.

It is a busy time for us and would recommend booking accommodation well in advance. Being so close to the ferry terminal and just a short trip to three distilleries makes us a popular destination.
Glad you enjoyed you coffee and cakes. I too enjoy the nutty caramel slice!
