When I found this hotel on the internet the website gave little useful information beyond a brief description and contact details. The person that I spoke with on the telephone was most helpful and enthusiastic about the hotel so we took a chance and booked.
The hotel on the left at the first corner you come to in Port Ellen - if you come by ferry. It is a completely refurbished property that only opened in October 2011 so the whole white walls and oak floor and door decor looks stunning and modern. The restaurant menu was superb, including steak, langoustines, lobster and oysters (when available) and the cooking was very good, with Scott overseeing the kitchen (and most other things in the hotel as well!). Breakfast was good and whilst the cooked part was very good the cold buffet was a little lacking.
The rooms were very good and the beds exceptionally comfortable. However, a comfy chair in the larger rooms would be good. Baths and showers are also modern and very good. The inclusion of a lift in the hotel makes it very good for disabled people.
Having read some of the earlier reviews it is clear that Scott is really getting this hotel working well and we would certainly look to stay here when we come to Islay again.More
