“A Joyous experience.”

Brilliant B&B, look no further when you come off the ferry. The Landlady (Joy!)is a character and a delight. Comfortable, friendly and very reasonable. You'll have as much fun with Joy as a night out in a distillery. Reason enough to visit Islay, never mind the other attractions.

Joy the hostess at Askernish was exactly that..a JOY! She is ready to make appointments at distilleries, call rental car companies(over and over), give advice on anything Islay and her breakfasts were yummy too. Choice of a cooked breakfast plus yogurt, toast crumpets, cereal ,juices, lovely tea and coffe. We were very happy we chose Askernish.
We stayed in a wonderful, inviting room. The roomy bath was romantic with big slipper tub as well as a roomy shower. Coffee and tea were available in your room. The bed was comfy and we slept well. Located right across from the harbour, the view is terrific.
Highly recommed the indian restaurant in town. It is well priced and delicious and you can bring in your own alcohol. The choc fudge cake at the white hart inn was YUM! Dinner was just so so but the roaring fire was very welcoming and the service was good.
We came to Islay for the distilleries, and left feeling like it would never have been as amazing without experiencing with Joy's help and laughter.

Room Tip: The big tub room upstairs is very very nice!

Joy made us feel very much at home in Port Ellen. Well located overlooking the harbour , nice room, large bathroom and excellent breakfasts. Would recommend highly.
Plan your evenings out as not much to do in the village!

My wife and I could only stop for one night as Joy was fully booked for the rest of the week, she certainly saved the reputation of the Isle of Islay in one sentance "Yes I have ground floor rooms available" and it was as if it was meant to be, the Room was very clean and had a superb bathroom en suite, and Joy suggested we went to the Oa to watch the sunset as the weather was lovely and the sunset was spectacular. Breakfast was fantastic and afterwards we visited Seal Bay to see the seals another recomendation from Joy, an excellent B&B and very good value.

Joy was a wonderful host and for the price you get great value. She definately has the customer service side spot on! Do not be afraid to try the fish for breakfast, especially the smoked haddock is to die for! Location is excellent and Joy pointed out some great spots for us to visit on the island, a bit off the beaten track. We especially enjoyed going to one of the beaches north west-ish on the island, we had a huge and picturesque beach all to ourselves! (I did manage to get absolutely soaked through though, haha) One tip for food, Bridgend Hotel is great. The best food we had on the Island! And the older lady serving was great too! Very busy when we were there. Another tip is the Cyber Cafe/Community Centre in Port Ellen, affordable, homecooked and great!

We chose Askernish because we were leaving Islay from Port Ellen and we never regretted our choice. It is a good base too for exploring the Island. Best done if you bring a car, or you can hire one from one of the car hire services on the island. We had one day "by bus" and one day by car. On the car day it rained but it was still a bit better than having to rely on bus times! Go to Islay! Stay at Askernish! I have come back to the mainland liking whisky as well, which I did not expect! Is that a bonus or is it bad? Ask my partner, he is the one who will have to share! ;)

We stayed for 3 nights and the host Joy was just wonderful. She always had time to explain things or make a call to book something. The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable and the view was great. The breakfast was delightfull and well cooked. All the place have a feeling of a cosy old small hotel. We just love all the island. When ever you go out, people you met have a smile and a word for you "morning" "hello" "how do you do" it was so friendly!!!! There is only one thing we dislike with Islay and Port Ellen, there is no good restaurant, but it´s doesn´t matter... because Islay is such a wonderful place!
