We went for a bar meal while on Islay. Tables crushed in round a very busy bar. Serving staff in experienced and did not make you feel welcome. Maybe because we weren't staying there!! Children's meal was awful. 4 Pale smiley faces and 4 chicken nuggets for £4.75!! Sorry but couldn't recommend it. Special chicken and leek pie arrived thrown on the plate with cold potatoes. So disappointing.

Sunday evening meal, good menu choices and our meals when they arrived were beautifully cooked and presented. Portions were generous , indeed we felt that the starter we each chose ( smoked mackerel pâté) was actually big enough for one portion to have satisfied us both!
Prices were high , but at least that bought us high quality food.

We had the beginnings of a a lovely meal at the PC Hotel while on a recent holiday on Islay. The food sampled was excellent. The staff were pleasant but seemed inexperienced. Our table, booked for 6.30pm, was needed for another party at 8pm.. At 7.40 pm we were told that as the table was needed, we did not have time for sweets. Why not? Could the party coming in at 8pm not have had a drink in the bar and chosen from the menu before being shown to the table? We would have had sweets at the table, coffees and drinks in the bar if necessary. We would have made an evening of our night in Port Charlotte sampling the whiskies on offer in the bar. However, there is another inn. And we assume that there will be room there when we next visit Islay. Lochindaal Hotel here we come!!

I have stayed at the Port Charlotte Hotel in the past, and returned in August 2013 based on those positive previous experiences. Travelling to Islay in peak month August will not be inexpensive and paying London prices for a hotel on Islay may seem pricey. But the hotel is very good - lovely restaurant and bar with live music two nights a week (at least during the Summer months). Great, vibrant atmosphere with excellent food in the restaurant. The drawback, if there is one, is cost. Frankly you will spend more travelling around Scotland than most anywhere in Europe if you are staying in half decent hotels. But on Islay, I am not aware (after three visits) of any better place to stay. Very nice staff - book the restaurant or you will never get in, The lobster is delicious as is the rest of menu. Great stay, pricey, but worth it

Booking from the US for the visit to Islay was difficult as most hotels on the island were almost all fully booked for July, upon the recommendation from another hotel that was full we were able to secure a room for a Saturday night and was waitlisted for the second night hoping for a cancellation that never happened. We arrived from the mainland by ferry mid morning and was anxious to visit the whisky distilleries right away and check in to the hotel when we found it mid afternoon. The weather was sunny and brisk but seasonably cold at 16 and the mainland was 28.
Port Charlotte Hotel was located on one of the few main roads from Port Ellen ferry terminal about a forty minute drive as the roads are either single track and others slightly better 30mph is suggested which I agree too willingly. The hotel is adjacent to a rocky outcrop with a small sandy beach to the rear of the property,a small garden for alfresco drinks and part of the hamlet which are mostly cottages all immaculately kept and painted gleaming white. Upon entering the reception it is part of a library and parlour come sitting room with mostly antique furniture and a comfy set of chairs and sofa.We were welcomed and sat down to cups of tea and cookies.the alcove to our right was the entrance to their restaurant to our left through the hall was the bar for residents and locals with live music on the weekends. With only 30 plus rooms the hotel was full so we booked our table in the small restaurant for 7pm and proceeded to our room on the first floor with sea view.It was adequate, small to say the least with en-suite,well thought out and more than comfortably for its size, tea and coffee maker and you can drink the water from the tap.The bed was comfortable the linens spotless and good value for money even in the summer season. The evening meal was a la carte with daily specials catering for maybe 15 people at any one time a reservation is suggested and times staggered to suit. The menu was excellent with Lamb,Steaks and Seafood,we had Oysters fresh local Lamb and I had Lobster with seasonal vegetables and an order of extra roast potatoes and salads, plenty of wine to choose from and many in half bottles as well. The food was served quickly with an aire of professionalism from a single Maitre D and one female server, hot timely and delicious I was so surprised at the quality which was excellent the taste even better. We sent the chef our compliments it was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Breakfast also was just as enjoyable with freshly baked breads and an enormous Scotch breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, haggis, blood sausage, tomatoes, beans and more is very welcomed and local smoked kippers a fish delicacy, porridge with salt or sugar and a lot more.I recommend the hotel highly and it is strongly advised to reserve ahead as sadly we had to leave as no cancellation happened and we sadly said good bye to a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: It is over 100 years old and the main rooms face the sea but of varying sizes, the main worry is to s...

The hotel was very welcoming with easy parking out front. There is a wonderful lounge with a peat fire to take the chill off on a damp and windy day. Restaurant menus were passed out in the lounge to allow ordering dinner while having your pre-dinner drink. The food selection was extensive and portions very ample. But importantly, the quality of the food, presentation and service were all excellent. After dinner in the pub on a Wednesday evening, there was a small group playing Scottish music. The owner would occasionally come to the front of the room to sing Gaelic songs. And if that didn't get you inspecting the very extensive whisky list ... !

Room Tip: Room 10 has views both ways: towards the village and out to sea.

Most places that serve 'barfood' do the usual suspects: burgers, a pricy steak, chicken and pasta... But here, they show their guests something different: duck, pheasant with chorizo and a special menu of the day. Prices are OK. But not the least, staying on a whiskey isle like this, they have - of course - a whiskey menu, with more options than ever seen before.

Hotel is a bit old fashioned, but also stylish and traditional in a good way.

Bargain about the price with this friendly people:-)
