Bunnahabhain is unique among the Islay distilleries for their lack of peat and smoke. I did the maturation tasting and we sampled a half-dozen single casks of various years and finishes. It's a really interesting way to see how the tastes change over time. Plus you get to bring home samples! Colin was a great host, he really loves to just enjoy the whisky without getting bogged down in the technical details, although he's happy to go in to depth if you want to nerd out. It makes for a grand time, and worth the effort to get to this out of the way distillery!

This place allways has a special place in my heart because I came here for the first time in 2000. Back in those days there was a room upstairs in the office building that was the shop and visitor centre. I loved my tours with the late John MacLellan a great and sadly lost personality.
The new owners, Distell, decided to demolish the little village wich was heartbreaking because people where born or even died there.
When we got here with a group, we had a lovely experience because something went wrong in the distillery, the wort cooler decided to spray some water. At these moments you can see how the staff reacts and working together as a team.
The shop offers you a range of whisky, glassware and other stuff. The new visitor centre is taking shape and will open in 2020.

Note: if you still can get a tour with Robin Morton, take that chance!!!

We arrived on the grounds of the Bunnahabhain distillery on an overcast Saturday in November. The drive to the distillery was on a beautiful, nature-filled (we saw 3 fawns and many other wildlife), single-lane road which opened up to the distillery directly in front of us and the sea to our left. We were greeted by a very friendly Colin, who would be our tour guide. We did the Maturation Tasting (in a room surrounded by aging whisky in casks) which included tasting drams of spirit run, 3 yr, 6 yr, and 12 yr. We had an amazing tasting experience with Colin -- he was knowledgable, generous, funny, and a super-friendly guide. Afterward we walked the grounds a bit and he showed us their huge, and very unpolished, yet very lovely stills. The tour with Colin was the highlight of our trip to Islay. We can't wait to visit next year and chat it up with Colin again!

My friend and I had a great tasting with Colin this week, well worth the trip up to Port Askaig. I wouldn't go on another trip to Islay without going back.

Four of us touring the Isle of Islay and tasting whisky, Bunnahabhain distillery was top on our list. We booked the Ultimate Bunnahabhain and out guide was Sarah. We tasted six exceptional whiskies, half of which are no longer available. Sarah was a whisky expert and knew the background of each whisky we tasted. We passed on the tour as the tasting was our main objective. The gift shop has a wide range of whiskies available for tasting ad purchase. And the view over the waterway is spectacular on a nice day. For any whisky aficionado traveling the Isle of Islay, I would say this distillery is a must.
