“has some peculiarities”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2008

If you’re looking for a quiet little island hideaway, don’t stay here. This is not the sort of place where you’re shown to your room and left in peace. The accommodation’s fine and the free wi-fi is excellent, but the place does have some peculiarities. Make sure you request that your stuff not be moved about when the room is serviced, otherwise you’ll be searching for your things. The landlady she seems to have aspirations as a children’s television presenter, which I found very irritating. And you can’t pay by card.

Don’t eat here. The food’s ok, but there is no choice. And you need to provide your own wine. You’ll have a much nicer meal at the Harbour Inn in Bowmore. Or you can walk down to the Ballygrant Inn, where the food is similar but you have a full menu to choose from, can pick where you sit at the table, and don’t have to share your table with strangers. Nor are you stuck for 30 minutes making pre-dinner conversation with other guests.

Overall, I'd only recommend you stay here if you're one of those people who especially likes to spend their holiday hearing the opinions of new acquaintances.

Our stay at Kilmeny was amazing! Margaret is the most delightful, helpful and hospitable person. Our room was perfect, spotless (the housekeepers do a fantastic job) and decorated in perfect taste. The lovely touches such as a splendid decanter of whisky, homemade biscuits etc. made the experience very special. Our breakfasts were delicious and meeting the other guests a pleasure. We spent another 2 weeks driving around Scotland and measured every other guest house against Kilmeny and not one of them measured up to Kilmeny. Our catchcry became "Margaret would never have served/done that!"
We thoroughly recommend this wonderful place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our three night stay at Kilmeny. Our room, the suite, was spacious and well appointed. The breakfasts were excellent. We especially enjoyed the homemade granola. Kilmeny is a beautiful farmhouse set on a hill with stunning views. Extra touches like the complimentary whisky were very much appreciated. Last but not least, it was our most gracious hosts, Margaret and Blair, that made Kilmeny exceptional.

Your Islay or rather Kilmeny experience begins when the door opens to welcome you inside the family home. A warm and genuine friendly welcome greated us and our friends, staying for three nights in April 2007. The wow factor in being shown our friends bedroom continued as we were shown our room, a new suite just completed for the new season, we were to be the first guests. Our suite had a small sitting area with two comfortable easy chairs, small tables and a wee dram waiting to welcome us. A sink, fridge, tea making facilities, home made biscuits was contained in the sitting area. Fully glazed doors led into the bedroom area dominated by a king size bed with canopy. All draped with Islay material from the local wollen mill, curtain fabrics and cushions also were finished in the local material. Antique furniture completed the bedroom with a huge dressser, chairs, dressing table and bedside cabinets, giving a nice counrty house feal. A large walk in cupboard provided hanging storage and luggage space. Every detail thought through to provide all the things like, bathrobes, slippers (baffies), shoe cleaning box, hot water bottle (electric blanket on the bed), a large wall mounted LCD TV.
The bathroom was very spacious WC, walk in shower, free standing slipper bath, twin wash bowls, chair and lots of fuffy white towels, not to mention Arran cosmetics for soaps, shampoo, even a razor and tooth brushes. No shortage of hot water.
That's the accommodation apart from the residents lounge to share with your fellow guests, again this is furnished in country house style all very comfortable. The dining room has an air of formality with mahogany tables polished to reflect the silver again creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Within minutes of arrival we were served afternoon tea and our first taste of the home baking. (Try and avoid spilling tea like me on the carpet, hopefully we left a better impression with the host by the end of our stay, than the stain left on the carpet.)
Breakfast was a real delight, again all local produce and cooked to perfection, nothing was too much trouble. Do try the black pudding, the porridge, stewed fruit - just try it all.
The highlight of our stay was the dinner one evening (normally offered twice a week to guests), whatever you do don't miss out on this. The whole experience will stay with you as a fond memory of Islay hospitality at its very best. The standard of cooking, presentation, good company made this a great night. Relax in the lounge afterwards reflecting on the day with a dram of Islay malt, what can be better.
All too soon it's time to depart, but how many hotels do you depart with a cuddle from the owner.
Yes, we will be back, not just for the Islay whisky but to enjoy and experience Kilmeny once more.

We found the reviews here on Tripadvisor and had to see for ourselves! Other reviews are accurate! Plus free wireless for our laptops. And maybe some Northern Lights a little later tonight.

We have just returned from four night's stay at Kilmeny. The standard of the accommodation was excellent. The food was absolutely delicious. The owner takes meticulous care with ever detail and is very skilled in making her guests welcome. I cannot recommend Kilmeny highly enough.
