We had a wonderful two nights here in extremely comfortable accommodation. The bedroom was superb as was the rest of the house. Very well equipped with all you could possible think of even down to a taster of one of the local whiskys in our room. The breakfasts were excellent with a wonderful range of homemade produce, stewed fruit, bread, and fruit loaves etc and a fantastic cooked selection for those who needed it.. An evening meal is offered on two evenings in the week. We thoroughly enjoyed some delicious roast lamb and were very disappointed not to be able to stay for the menu being offered on the day we were leaving. Margaret our hostess was very obliging and we cannot speak to highly of our stay. I truly hope we will have a return visit, hopefully in better weather

Thank you Trevor and Judith , your comments were both uplifting and gratifying .
I think you may have an idea of how much we enjoyed having you both stay with us , and it was a pleasure cooking for such appreciative guests .
It's a delight helping visitors discover Islay for the first time , and wonderful to know that you would like to return .Both Blair and I are looking forwards to the time we can welcome you back .
Sincerely ,
Margaret

This is our third stay at Kilmeny and it remains our favourite destination. If Islay is the jewel in the crown of the Hebridean Islands, then Kilmeny is at it's spectacular centre. The farmhouse must have been at the end of a rainbow as it is such a welcoming, beautiful, peaceful location. Margaret and Blair are wonderful hosts and nothing is ever too much trouble should you ever need help or advice about any aspect of this very special island. Should your stay include a Tuesday or Thursday night then you are in for a treat if you opt to have a meal in Kilmeny as Margaret's cooking is top notch and great value. Breakfasts too are also an opportunity to indulge in Margaret's baking and freshly cooked meals - if you are on a diet, you won't be for too long given the homemade meuslis, fruit, bread, jams and scones that are a constant feature of the fare available that will set you up for the day ahead. Aside from the gastronomic delights, the farmhouse itself is "picture perfect" . All the bedrooms are en-suite and are spotlessly clean with every thing to hand from toiletries to bath robes to fresh milk in the fridge and a bit of fresh flapjack to keep you going until dinner. The list of superlatives appropriate to Kilmeny are immense. However rather than reading about the place, the best thing to do is to go and experience it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

My wife and I stayed here for two days as part of a trip round Islay. It's tucked away down a drive signed just "Kilmeny" at the far west end of Ballygrant village.

From the first minute we arrived, the hostess Margret was meeting, greeting, chatting, getting us installed in our room, offering advice on our stay in Islay and generally being friendly. Later on in the stay she was to be found cooking and entertaining. The place should really be called "Chez Margret".

The breakfasts are superb (porridge, choice of cooked fare, fruit, cerial, juices etc) and there is a dinner option on Tuesdays and Thursdays - we had a 3 course meal centering on roast Lamb. With dinner there's only a choice of starter, but Margret sounds people out the day before to check their preferences before deciding what to cook. The atmosphere was more like a dinner party than a restaurant. Plan on driving to dinner on the other nights - there is one restaurant (the Ballygrant inn) within walking distance but it was closed for refurbishment when we tried to go there for Lunch. Call them in advance, or drive to one of the places in Bowmore or Port Charlotte.

You're encouraged to socialise with the other guests - there's an afternoon tea in the drawing room, and two large tables seat all the guests for meals. We were staying with a few Islay regulars who gave us some good tips for the rest of our stay.

The rest of the reviews of this place say it all really. There has only been one negative review and that seems to have been from someone who would have preferred to have been left alone. All I can say is that they're missing the point. There are plenty of places where you can be left alone (try renting a holiday cottage) but there is only one Margret. Her style of hospitality is hands-on, and the place is all the better for it.

Margaret and her husband are truly exceptional hosts who run/operate the nicest Five Star B&B on all of Islay. My wife and I stayed in the Gold room for two evenings which was roomy, very comfortable, quiet and peaceful. Plus the view of their operating farm is very pleasant and calming. The breakfast was deliciously prepared with everything made to order. We can not say enough good things about it and we highly recommend it; definitely a five star B&B.

NOTE: If you are traveling to Islay, in August, for whiskey distillery tours you should ask about “The Show” as the distilleries will be closed. On August 12 the Isle of Islay hosted The Show. It is local Isle of Islay holiday and all businesses (including the distilleries) are closed for the day. It is a wonderfully charming “country fair” event. It was really enjoyable to speak with the local farmers, witness the livestock judging and interact with the local folks – who are some of the nicest people on the planet. Their son, Tony, won the highest honor at the 2010 Show for his for his prize lamb.

We ended up staying at Kilmeny on our last night on the island. This is a far cry from the place into which we had originally booked which turned out to be much less than alright. Staying at Kilmeny more than made up for our disappointment of the original booking. This was a real treat and we felt very pampered. Margaret and Blair were most gracious hosts. The number of special touches throughout are stay were innumerable and never ending — gorgeous, well-appointed huge rooms, lovely sitting area, a whisky in our room along with homemade biscuits, etc. Margaret made us feel very special without being intrusive. We also enjoyed the meal we had there as well as meeting other guests. We particularly enjoyed the pre-dinner drink and social moment. It is always nice to hear what others are doing and get their tips and tricks to get the lay of the land. If I had known about Kilmeny Country House, I would Have booked my whole time here. This is my absolute favourite bed and breakfast.
