Caol Ila Distillery

Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Caol Ila distillery is one of Islay’s best kept secrets. Situated on the North West of the Island, your initial approach takes in amazing views over the Sound of Islay and over to the Paps of Jura. The distillery itself hugs the coastline, the old dunnage warehouse that dates back to 1900 guards the stunning glass fronted still house. This George Leslie Darges styled building houses the six impressive copper stills which stand guard over the Sound of Islay. Allow some time to take a tour and experience whisky production at its best. Embracing both old and new technologies while utilizing skills going back generations, the distillery produces a well balanced, lightly smoked whisky, punctuated with fruit, spice and a little salt. Complete your visit with a tasting in the atmospheric surroundings of the old cooperage where you can experience some of Caol Ila's world class single malts.

We tried pot luck to get a tour and as they were full they helped us book another at bruichladdich and gave us a dram to taste while they fixed it up. Thank you and the view is stunning!

“Great tour”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

Yet again another great distillery tour by an informative guide and the tasting was done in the old part of the distillery which was good as the main building is more modern and looks very office like. Great scenery outside.

“Malt whisky on Islay”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

This was the fourth of the nine distilleries on the neighbouring islands of Islay and Jura which we visited during our week's holiday on Islay. Once again I enjoyed the taster of their malt whisky.

“Great whisky”
Reviewed August 4, 2014

Did the distillery tour. The lady who did the tour was very lively, and the tour was informative, but a bit long and drawn out and the reward is a tiny wee dram at the end from a choice of 3. Was expecting a bigger variety in the tasting. Did receive a free tasting glass though!

“Pleasant visit. Convenient for Port Askaig ferry.”
Reviewed July 28, 2014

This was the first of several distillery tours which we arranged during a whisky orientated visit to Islay.

The tour was led by a pleasant young girl, very friendly and helpful.

The distillery is a model of modern efficiency, so not the place to see the traditional whisky-making processes. However, the visit was interesting and informative and a decent comparison to the smaller and more traditional distilleries on the island.

Notes:
1. The fee for the visit will be waived if you join their Friends society.
2. Like most other distilleries on Islay, they do not ship whisky for you. So if you want to buy during your visit, you will have to make your own courier/shipping arrangements, if you cannot carry in your luggage.
