thought as this was through Hotel connections and not that cheap we were going to a good hotel but the only thing in its favour was the friendliness of the staff. Our first room was small and the window did not lock and as there was a raised garden at the back we asked to be moved, the 2nd room was much larger and had a bath not just a shower, we overlooked the car park but the room was very bright but you had to draw the curtains in the bathroom or the people in the opposite building could see right in. the bedside lamps were only controlled from one side of the bed. 2 hangers in the wardrobe was quite mean. Dinner on the first night was really poor , my salad consisted of lettuce pickled onions and beetroot not much trouble for a chef. we were given a complimentary drink on our first night and when we checked out 2 days later they tried to charge us for them. There was a party on the saturday night and as we were directly above the venue it was very noisy but thankfully we had ear plugs with us. the 2nd nights dinner was better but not up to a hotel which advertises outside as 4 star. would be very surprised if we ever go back

As a surprise Mr S booked a room at the Royal Hotel. With prior consent we had a late check-in (11.45pm). There was a wedding in full swing- no problem unless one had the room above the dance floor - which was exactly where our room was. We opened the door and switched on the light, but it didn't work. Mr S groped about in the dark to find a light that worked. The room was cramped, shabby and very disappointing. There were NO coat hangers in the wardrobe and we couldn't get the light in the windowless en-suite to work. We complained and asked for another room, but they didn't have one. They did, however, offer us a room in their other hotel along the road.we re-packed the car and drove to their other hotel as it was well after midnight and too late to find another hotel. The entrance to the Ivy hotel has been recently refurbished so it looked promising. Ha! That's what unsuspecting people might think, but the rooms are beyond ghastly! The very nice young lady showed me three of them so I could chose the best. Each one was more dreadful than the last...wallpaper peeling off the walls, chipped paint, shabby carpets, etc.etc. I chose a room, based on the fact that it was too late to drive home, but at least the lights worked. The young lady offered us a bottle of wine by way of apology. So with some reluctance we took the room. There were no toiletries in the en-suite - not even a bar of soap. The towels were old, grey and like sandpaper. The bed should have been binned YEARS ago. There was a headboard on one side of the bed, but not on the other - fascinating. The decor had their customary peeling wallpaper and chipped paint, complete with the occasional crack in the walls and ceiling. For some reason known only to Visit Scotland, they have been awarded three stars, presumably that was for turning up. Do yourself a favour and stay away.

We only had lunch here as were passing thru the area - food and service were excellent and value for money was unreal!!! Will defo be back if ever anywhere close! I'd highly recommend both the fish and chips and scampi - very traditional and exactly what we were in the mood for. Nice airy room to eat in - I'd now like to come on a cold day with the fire lit up as I'm sure that would be gorgeous. I will be in this area at least once a month in future for appointments and will be sure to eat here again!!!
