At reception I left a box with a little birthday cake with candles and asked that it be brought to our table at the end of our tea. I left a £5 tip requesting a little bit extra attention and extra milk for the children's tea. A sullen waiter showed us to our table - no table cloth and salt and pepper on the table. The tea arrived after a bit of waiting and 15 minutes later the cakestand appeared.
The sandwiches, scones and cakes were fine but the waiter disappeared. I went to reception to ask if we could have more milk. It appeared eventually. The children were becoming impartient so I had to go to reception again to ask if the waiter could bring in the birthday cake. I told him that I thought the service was very poor to which he gave no reply and was more sullen than ever. By this time I felt quite irritated that what was meant to be a very special occasion was so full of frustrations.
I regretted my £5 tip. So another tip for the Popinjay is -Train your staff to be efficient, welcoming and friendly and a little continental panache wouldn't go amissMore
