We booked the hotel using an itison voucher. We had an "upgraded" room for an extra £60 but it certainly wasn't my idea of an upgraded room.

The hotel was full, but didn't feel overcrowded. On arrival, we were advised that the heating wasn't working, but a plumber was due out. I feel the hotel should have contacted guests prior to arrival to advise of the lack of heating & offered alternative dates.

We had an electric heater in our room, but limited hot water. The shower was poor, with very low pressure. Generally, the hotel needs some TLC. Flaking paint on the windows, worn out carpets/ rugs etc. Despite running late for dinner, the food was good, although we were glad we didn't spend the extra £9 for the steak.

Don't be fooled by the hotel's web site - it is good marketing but certainly not representative of the real thing!

Just back from a 2 night stay (living social deal) and we had a lovely and relaxing time. We upgraded the room and we stayed in a room called "scone" it was a lovely room, very large with a four poster bed and a double jacuzzi in the room itself. We found the bed to be a little soft for us and I think if I stayed for more than 2 nights I would have had problems with my back. The room had a large flat screen tv and picked up the free WiFi with no problem. The room was warm even though I think they had been having issues with the boiler the weekend we stayed. The rest of the hotel was delightful, with log fires in the lounge and dining room. And in the evening they light lots of candles which add to the ambiance. The food was included the first night and it was absolutely divine, so much in fact we dined there the second night too. A bottle of house wine is around the £15.00 mark so in line with any restaurant. The staff were very attentive and helpful and all local from what I could tell. Breakfast was lovely too. In all, yes the hotel is a little "tired" and the room could have done with maybe a bit of a revamp in the bathroom (toilet seat) and door edge paint but certainly nothing major. Would I stay again... a big yes definitely. Maybe not paying the full rate but I would certainly go with another deal. A lovely romantic hideaway for couples, and our first night was made even better by the company that we met in the hotel lounge. Apologies to the staff for keeping them up until 2am !! I think there were a few sore heads the next morning at breakfast.

We had afternoon tea today. It's a very pretty old rustic building. The staff were very helpful and the service was tariff. The tea itself was lovely and lots of it. We would highly recommend a visit.

Just back from one nights stay (on a deal) dinner bed & breakfast and cannot fault the hotel.

The old fashioned decor throughout the hotel is lovely, and in the evenings with the real fires and candles lit in both the lounge & dining room makes for a lovely warm atmosphere.

The room we stayed in was in the main hotel was very comfortable and warm with everything you would need.

The staff were all also lovely, would highy reccommend and we will definately be back.

My husband and I had booked this hotel through a Itison deal , as no standard rooms were available any Saturdays we upgraded to their top room of the castle for an additional £150 . It was lovely but the bathroom had a poor flushing toilet and no soap in the dispenser . On the whole we found the hotel rather chilly and had to borrow my husbands jumper to keep warm. I was so excited about dinner but came away slightly disappointed. I ordered the steak at a hefty supplement of £9 and could not believe it was accompanied with a pile of raw onions . Not nice! At breakfast the next morning we were both served tepid tea and coffee, another wee hiccup. Staff were very friendly and helpful but think there lacked attention to detail.

We've just returned from a one night stay at the Shield hill Castle. My husband had purchased a Groupon Voucher for the stay. All in all it was value for money although I will outline the Pros and Cons we experienced;
Pros - friendly evening bar staff, excellent evening meal, well priced bar drinks, great breakfast and freshly cooked to order.
Cons - unfriendly, unwelcoming day staff and service on arrival. Disappointing allocation to the stable rooms but no surprise seeing as we were on a voucher (even though with discussions with others staying they too were on a voucher stay but were staying in the main hotel!) our room smelt of stale smoke, had black hairs on the bed, was cold and uninviting, no shower gel in dispenser - no individual bottles here! The worst thing about the room was the paper thin walls! It's not the hotels fault that we had some obscene man staying next door to us who decided to come back to his room at 3.30am without consideration of his neighbours at this time! With out being crass, once woken you could hear all his happenings shall we say before he went to bed!
Oval the stay was fine and was value for money but not the romantic special stay that we were hoping for.

Room Tip: I hope for your stay you get a room in the main hotel and not the stable rooms!

Just returned from the Shieldhill Castle after a birthday treat for my partner.
We have used this Hotel on several occasions and have never been disappointed. On arrival, we were advised that we had been given a free upgraded by the owner which was a lovely birthday surprise.
The room we were given was the otterburn which is one of the bigger rooms with lovely interior decor including an open fireplace. The bathroom which is also large has a double jacuzzi which is a great central feature. The decor throughout was lovely and the room cleaned to a high standard.
On the night we stayed the hotel was fully booked but never appeared to be overcrowded. The lounge had a roaring open fire which with the snow outside made for a lovely ambience.
I was pleasantly surprised by the bar prices and found them to be on a par with normal pub bar prices and not the usual hotel over inflated prices that you sometimes find.
Dinner at night was as we have always found to be of a high standard with full portions. Despite being fully booked we were not kept waiting for dinner and were seated at the exact time we had booked.
Breakfast was a large full cooked scottish which was more than enough with unlimited toast and tea. The staff even made me up a tray of breakfast to take to my partner for breakfast in bed.
We spent the whole time in the hotel and as always, found its a great get away where we are made to feel very welcome from all the staff.
We have stayed in many places over the years but this hotel ticks all the boxes for what we look for. The hotel setting, informal atmosphere and general ambience of the Hotel as well as the willingness of staff to help makes this our favourite place to get away.
