We received vouchers as an engagement present from friends. When we booked the sales representative said that the classic room had a resort view, we could have accepted this if the room had been 5* standard. We arrived at our classic room in the spa building which smelt musty, was very dated and worn and the bathroom looked like something out of the 1970's with a hairdryer you might use at a local swimming baths! We asked at reception for an upgrade (which we paid for). The difference in rooms was like going from a 3* to a 5*. We loved the rest of the weekend but could have done without the hour sorting things out and moving rooms.
Since returning we have written to the hotel explaining our disappointment about the standard of the first room. My gripe is mainly that they should explain to the customer when booking, it is not just the view out of the room which makes it classic but the standard of the accommodation (See photos). We received a reply saying that the room is yet to be refurbished and in such a large hotel refurbishment needs to be done in stages, fair enough but dont advertise these rooms at a 5* price.
The moral of the story is when you go to Turnberry only stay in the main building!More
