“Unexpectedly good.”
Reviewed May 6, 2014

The shop name was a bit grotty and hard to see,but the scripted windows looked modern and when we peeped in, the restaurant looked nicely laid out and inviting, so we gave it a go. Very quiet for a weekday lunchtime, but there was a good choice on the menu and all four of us chose different items. Garlic mushrooms in a cheesy sauce was delicious, as were a cylindrical haggis, needs & tatties and my generous prawn cocktail. I chose beef Stroganoff as my main and was not disappointed as it was tender with a tasty sauce. Two steak pies plus veg & potatoes were pronounced excellent and a salmon fillet was larger than the usual fillet & beautifully cooked. Only one of us had room for dessert and a well presented arrangement of a circular cheesecake and ice cream looked very tempting, and tasted good. With drinks the total was round the £60 mark, but as my brother in law paid, I cannot remember the exact total! We enjoyed it so much that we returned a couple of days later for another lunch, but found the restaurant closed with a sign indicating that the place was closed until 5pm, which was odd as alongside the menu there was a notice saying that lunch was served between noon and 5pm. Disappointing as we were leaving the following day, but we enjoyed the whole meal and had the attention of a very helpful waitress. Parking on the seafront was no problem and we had time afterwards for a stroll around the shops. Girvan isn't a big place, but it certainly had some of the most friendly & cheerful shop assistants we've ever met!

“Nice meals.”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

This is a nice place for a meal, friendly staff and good food, well worth a visit if you are in Girvan. It is close to the harbour and there is ample parking nearby. The total bill for four meals and drinks was just under £60. The service was friendly and the food hot and tasty.

“Very Disappointing”
Reviewed April 22, 2014 via mobile

We went for a bank holiday weekend lunch and were very disappointed on all counts; poor service, low quality produce, poorly prepared food, small quantities, and overpriced.
The waitresses kept themselves busy but, were not very attentive and failed to wash their hands between tasks... i.e. Washed tables then handled cutlery or served drinks (with thumb in drink). Nobody seemed to be in charge of front of house operations so the waitresses did the job but, didn't pay too much attention to customers. The restaurant was far from full and there was no excuse for indifferent customer service.
The "garlic" mushrooms had no flavour except for the inexplicable and overpowering taste of balsamic vinegar glaze. One of the mushrooms still had bits of compost stuck to the bottom of the stem. So the mushrooms were fresh, just poorly prepped and cooked blandly.
The duck breast starter could have been anything... I couldn't id the meat as duck - it was rubbery, unseasoned, and tasteless. However, the salad was fresh and the dressing tasted fine.
The mains were an even bigger letdown. I've had better lasagne in a supermarket ready meal. The portion was small, the meat component was minuscule, the sauce was undercooked ( the onions were almost raw as were the tomatoes). The pasta was undercooked in the middle. The chips were fine though.
Beef stroganoff fared no better; there was very little meat and the sauce was split. The rice was fine though.
I looked at the website and was looking forward to the tempura haddock as reviewed in a national newspaper in 2009. The haddock served in 2014 does not live up to expectations of that review. The fish did not seem to be fresh - I suspected that it was frozen, the portion was small, and the tempura batter could have used a little bit more time in the fryer. The chips were fine though.
The waitress didn't offer a pudding menu and we didn't ask for it.
The bill was a real shocker. I have paid similar prices for very nice meals at other local restaurants (Wildings, The Stage Door) so I know that it is possible to get a good meal and don't mind paying for it. I do mind paying over the odds for poor quality and inattentive service. We left hungry. The chips, rice, and salad were ok... everything else was not.

“Lovely little restaurant”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

Had 2 evening meals at the Harbour Head and both were lovely. The fish pie first time and chicken second and then the creme brulee which was 'to die for'. Partner had lasagne which he said was very good and mum had stroganoff, also delicious. Lovely little place with very friendly attentive staff.
