Location and setting gorgeous. We booked a meal for four as a special treat on holiday in the region. The meal was well presented and the staff attentive and informed. My main course of grouse consisted of 4 small fillets of breast, one of which was so high that it smelled off, I thus cut a small taster for each of my companions, all of whom agreed. Obviously I mentioned it to the waiter who apologised, but we were a little surprised that the chef didn't bother to come and chat. Desserts were disappointing. Meal for four with wine and apperitifs (for 3) amounted to £400.

When this lady mentioned that she thought one piece of her grouse might have been ‘off’, our staff of course apologised without reservation, as you would expect in any good restaurant. We feel, however, that since the matter has been made so public, it is perhaps not unreasonable for us to mention that three of our experienced chefs, as well as two experienced front of house staff sampled the piece of grouse in question when it came back to the kitchen, and could not reach the same conclusion. Our chefs are happy to come out and chat to diners, but we would never impose them on people uninvited, so you have to ask! Finally, we feel that the total dinner cost quoted in the review is a little misleading. Our six course Michelin Star dinner costs £65.00 per person, so the cost for dinner for a table of four is £260.00. The remaining £140.00 of this account was for additional items chosen by the customers. Two bottles of very nice wine were purchased for £92.00, but our wines start from £8.00 per large glass or £28.00 per bottle – we have some very good, very carefully chosen house wines. There was a charge of £15.75 for two excellent local beers and a double G&T, £2.00 for a charity donation and a very generous £32.25 gratuity – this last not being at all expected, but a thought that is always much appreciated by our hardworking staff.

I had booked the Glenapp Castle well in advance to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday and was not disappointed. As we drove into the property on a rainy evening, we knew were in for a magical evening. We were met at the car with an umbrella and were ushered upstairs for cocktails and canapes in the drawing room. We then proceeded to the dining room, where we were presented with course after course of the most delicious, thoughtfully prepared food. As each course was brought out we were given a brief description by our most competent waiter, Martin, and if we had further questions, he was happy to answer them. The food is amazing - the combinations of flavors was inspired and so deserving of the Michelin Star they have earned.

Family meal at Glenapp in July. Obviously the place cannot be faulted for location and layout. Atmosphere is quiet and understated which will probably suit most folk but I found it to be rather sombre and too serious.

Foodwise was a bit of an issue for me. I did not expect gargantuan portions but this was ridiculous. My wife eats like a bird so the portions were absolutely fine for her but for the rest of us it was a case of too little.

The Glenapp experience is one that we were all looming forward to but it flattered to deceive I'm afraid.

There are three very fine chip shops in Girvan, and if fish and chips is what you seek, they cannot be faulted. With no disrespect to them, our food at Glenapp is a very different kind of offering and experience. Our three course lunches, as sampled by this reviewer, come with canapes, petits fours, and freshly baked bread in ready supply. We also offer an additional cheese course as an option. We respect the author’s right to express his opinion on our portion sizes, and would very happily increase them if we felt it was appropriate, but having taken the opportunity to re-assess them, we are content that they are well within the norm for the type of food we offer, and that to increase them would not add anything good to the Glenapp experience. Service and knowledge of the staff with regard to the menus very good. Food excellent. Presentation wonderful. Would have been better to have had a longer rotation on the meals, having stayed 5 nights, we found the menus repeated. Nevertheless it was very good.

The whole lunch experience was a delightful fine dining treat. From the moment you enter the castle gates you are treated as a special guest. The menu ,though no choices ,was perfectly balanced. (When booking they do check if there are any foods you have issues with which is a nice touch.) We had super canapes to wet the appetite. Loved the terrine starter and the lamb main course was just delicious melt in the mouth. The cheese course we would give a miss the next visit as we felt not worth the £16.00 supplement. Slightly predictable choices of cheeses. But the peach souffle and raspberry sorbet was perfect finish before coffee and brownies in the lounge. All the food was beautifully presented by the many charming staff. The pretty grounds and gardens are well worth exploring after lunch. Lovely treat!
