If Dornoch gets all the Americans and Brora all the heritage nuts, many golfing visitors to the region may miss a very serious test of golf!
Mind you, the first hole is very gentle and generally not up to the standard of the rest of the course, so hold your judgement a bit, because it does get better and better, although the stunning sea views you get at Dornoch or Brora are quite rare here. Understated is the word.
This is also the big advantage with Tain as I see it: the seclusion. We were blessed by only having the RAF jets doing their bombing exercises at the nearby range (not the driving one, though) for company, so could play two rounds entirely at our own pace...a real luxury these days and something you could only dream of at Dornoch...
Make this place a must on your golfing itinerary to the region!

Our group played an afternoon round at Tain Golf Club, followed by dinner at the club's restaurant. While this course was not on our planned rota, we thoroughly enjoyed our round. A number of holes at Tain had very strong shot values, and the 2-3 club wind provided plenty of resistance to scoring. We appreciated the friendly welcome by the club's members and staff. The club's dinner fare was above-average quality - i thought my Scottish rump steak main was excellent.

Yet another really good course in this area. Tain is interesting, challenging and worthy of comparison against (possibly) better known courses in the area.

It provides a real test as it weaves its way through a variety of paddocks and dunes and its greens will expose any weakness in your putting.

Highly recommended.

Old Tom Morris...need I say more? If this course was not in the shadow of Royal Dornoch and Brora, it would have a better chance of becoming known...but then again, having more play could detract from the utter charm it now possesses. At its price point, I can say that if this course was near me, it would be my "go to" track!

We are golf nuts and this is a very interesting golf course - every hole is different and presents a new challenge. The greens follow the terrain (Old Tom Morris design) and it was refreshing to play golf the way it was originally intended. We learned that the bunkers were originally there because they were sunken rabbit warrens where the sheep would dig in and occupy - so they were sometimes in unexpected places on the course. Loved the experience and would recommend this golf course to any serious golfer.
