Applecross is remote and it is off season but we had a superlative meal. All five of us on a west coast tour chose the 9 course taster is the October special and I would challenge anyone to beat this value for money anywhere. Local ingredients crafted just the way I like it! The only disappointment was the slightly undercooked wild mushroom risotto but the dish was bursting with flavour so we quickly forgave them. The wine list is better than adequate and they have a good selection of local beers. It rained cats and dogs but who cared? With a massive wood burning stove, we felt well looked after and returned back to our B&B ready for action the next day.

What an auspicious find by a well-travelled couple fortunate enough to delight in the rarefied (think Amanresorts, Benu, Taillevent, or Wishart or Kitchin closer by), who also love coming across unexpected simple, high quality, local, out-of-the-way establishments such as this Potting Shed in the Walled Garden, during a day drive passing through Applecross. We were set to try the waterfront cafe in the local inn for lunch but to our dismay a bus discharged about 25 tourists directly into its front door just as we approached, so we quickly got back into our car. About a mile north along the bay on our way out of town, we saw an intriguing sign for The Walled Garden and 'restaurant open.' What a delightful historic walled garden with the season's last roses, statice, thistle blossoms and such, and a comfortable, clean, simple cafe along its back wall. Expecting not more than an adequate cheese sandwich, we were surprised to see a somewhat ambitious menu for such a small, remote establishment in a village at the end of a 20+ mile one-lane road! Something seemed very authentic and honest about the descriptions (written and oral) of the day's specials so we ordered the larger portion of local prawns and the haddock and leek gratin. They were both pure heaven. Prawns were THE sweetest, most plump crustaceans I have EVER tasted (they brought a large fingerbowl without any prompting so I bypassed the cutlery entirely), cooked simply to perfection, whole, just brimming with flavor and full of sweet roe, in the lightest lemon-garlic broth. Served with thick slices of excellent whole grain soda bread, and the freshest mixed lettuce salad leaves, lightly dressed, this plate was extraordinary. The haddock gratin was similarly well executed, with abundant fish and all one would expect in a creamy leek gratin of highest order, with tasty 'real' potatoes and other veggies on the side (no bland perfectly shaped supermarket produce here!). Service was friendly, competent and efficient - what more could one ask for? One of the kitchen staff answered a simple question about an ingredient we weren't familiar with by opening the refrigerator to show us the freshly shelled morsels. I wish every village in the civilized world had an establishment half as good as this. Tsukiji and Hong Kong would be very fortunate to have seafood so fresh and well prepared. While I don't have first hand experience with their four-legged animal-based traditional 'pub' type of food, I do highly recommend anything they offer of simple, fresh, local seafood! And as a side note, how nice to have clean toilet facilities to wash up after making such a happy mess of myself.
