“Even the Appletini was excellent!”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The Summer Isles Hotel could be anywhere, but no matter where it was located, with the food, choice of wines and variety of whisky - it would still be exceptional and have no problem attracting customers.

However, its in Achiltibuie, one of the most beautiful areas of the western highlands, which makes it even more special.

The room was a decent size, spotless, with decent pillows and all the ingredients need for a good nights sleep. The view was of the coast and even though its was raining, not an unusual occurrence in Scotland, the scenery was magnificent.

There is little point going on about how good the set tasters menu was, it was top quality and would knock a bunch of London's overblown gastro eateries into 2nd place.

Huge choice of wines although they do offer a suggested wine with each course with the tasters menu, but that really would add a bunch more money to your not insignificant bill.

They're also not bad at cocktails, but with all the other offerings........you will be spoilt for choice.

You will have to book well in advance to get a room and make sure you stay for dinner, you will have a remarkably good Scottish experience.

Friends had mentioned Summer Isles, having stayed here some 20 years previously and had waxed lyrical about the Hotel and the scenery and this had always stuck in my mind. So on our west coast of Scotland trip starting from Stornoway it felt natural we should call after arriving in Ullapool by ferry. We booked a local taxi firm and arrived in the mist which did little to shroud the absolute beauty of the surrounding area. We were greeted at the Hotel arriving rather late (6pm) to be advised that dinner was at 7pm but were given a little leeway before joining three other couples in the lounge for a pre-dinner drink. This before embarking on a 6 course meal with wines, from the sommelier if required, or in our case some of his choices and one special choice of ours. The wine knowledge and the way the sommelier (Neil), looked after us was outstanding, his after care even more so. I only wish i'd had more time to sample more of the whiskies in the wonderful whisky bar and discuss the same with him. We stayed in the Boat house which was a fantastic two floored cottage, expansive bathroom and spiral staircase to the bedroom with what would be beautiful views over the Summer Isles, the cottage allowed us relaxation time and space to spread out, i'm sure it would be lovely in the winter with the coal fire blazing. The service we received throughout from Neil and his staff was first class and I wouldn't hesitate in returning or recommending this Hotel. This is a wonderful part of the world and the scenery is stunning.

Near the end of a long, incredibly scenic one-track road is the Summer Isles Hotel. It is in an area of the Highlands that combines mountain landscapes with coastline, and the hotel matches its beautiful environment in lodging, food, and service. We arrived too late for the multi-course dinner but had an excellent repast in the pub. We stayed in the Log Cabin, which was spacious and excellent. Would love to go back. High marks!

This was the third of 5 hotels visited on a spontaneous trip round the highlands, each booked 24-48 hours before arrival. We were upgraded in this instance and given a fantastic log cabin in the midst of woodland and garden setting and reeking of pine resin. Very unusual and lovely. When we booked a table at the restaurant we were asked to arrive at 7.00 which was earlier than we intended but proved to be necessary. We met up with two couples in the small lounge who were fellow guests and spent half an hour chatting and drinking before the meal, which was a 6 course set piece with the option of a wine selection chosen for each course, or we could choose our own. We went with the sommelier's selection and the choices made were fantastic and an education. The meal lasted until about midnight (To be honest, after 6 wine courses, it was very hard to remember). A very different experience in terms of accommodation and dining, but very well worth the visit.

We stayed here in the 7th Aug for a night and loved the view from our room out over the Summer Isles which was made even better by the glorious sunshine. Staff were friendly and professional but meeting the other guests for drinks and canapés was not really for us. If people want to mix with others they will do in their own time, no need to put strangers together, it can be a bit uncomfortable. We could have course, not done so, but went along anyway. There is a small bar next door which we enjoyed but not so much the drunk locals singing and swearing at the top of their voices as they left the bar at closing time, no need for that behaviour lads. All in all though we did enjoy the hotel and our stay in a very pretty location.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the experience, as you say meeting other residents is not prescriptive, we have a couple of private areas in the Hotel! I personally apologise for the boisterous locals. They were celebrating winning the world championship win in Skiff racing at Ullapool, no mean feat for Achiltibuie, they came home to celebrate!

This was just a quick stop on a day out from Ullapool. The S I Hotel has always had a good reputation and I had hoped for superb seafood. My partner and I ordered the two specials.......dressed crab and langoustine ( or was it prawns.) Both dishes were overly COLD and therefore had virtually no flavour.
Thank goodness we had the real thing when we ended up a couple of days later in the Plockton Hotel and had superb seafood, and indeed in Sheildaig where I had the best smoked salmon ever.

We do try and serve our shellfish COLD as that's how most people seem to enjoy it, also from a food safety point of view I would rather take the odd negative feedback rather than risk the obvious consequence of keeping such commodities at higher temperatures. Should you choose to return please let us know and we can arrange the beautiful local shellfish to be presented at whatever temperature you like

Once again this year we have had lunch at the superb Summer Isles Hotel. This year I plucked up courage and went for the fish platter. Absolutely superb and beautifully presented and great value.
Others enjoyed crab dishes and great desserts.

This is a very good place to eat and is well worth the trip out to one of the best views of the summer islands.

Will be back again next year.

Your feedback is much appreciated; delighted you had the courage to eat the famous Summer Isles Hotel fish platter, certainly not the dish to eat if you are rushing to go anywhere.....
