Altandhu is some 22 miles from Ullapool, mostly along a single-track road. If you don't know it's here, Am Fuaran is an unexpected oasis. It is a bar-restaurant run in conjunction with a campsite across the road. They serve good locally sourced produce at reasonable prices, considering the cost of transporting anything from anywhere!

The front bar can be a little off-putting if the locals are "in residence", and the whole place is a little dark due to the black shiny floor, but if you are lucky enough to visit on a fine day and sit on the terrace overlooking the Summer Isles, it would be idyllic.

We visited this bar with a large family group in August 2013. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the food was great and service quick and efficient. The use of locally caught seafood in the menu gives you the feeling that you are helping support the local community beyond the bar itself.

The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. A great relaxing chilled out meal with the family.

It is almost two months since we ate at the Am Fuaran and the memories are still great. You go to a pub and get food that matches the best of restaurants. Nothing complicated but all fresh ingredients cooked to perfection.

Located right opposite the extremely good campsite that is owned by the same people, Am Fuaran is an unpretentious little pub with a great mix of locals and visitors. The restaurant area is cosy and welcoming but you need to book - disappointed -would be' customers were turned away when we were there. Superb squat lobster and langoustine from the small but perfectly cooked choice. Loved it.
